MARK BRIGHAM FROM HACKNEY AND PORTSMOUTH JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 15-YEAR-OLD BOY

In a case that has shocked both the local communities of Hackney and Portsmouth, a former police officer named Mark Brigham has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison after admitting to engaging in four counts of sexual activity with a minor aged just 15 years old.

Brigham, who was at the time serving as a police constable with the Metropolitan Police, committed these offenses in Portsmouth during the year 2008. The court proceedings revealed that the victim's family had approached Brigham for guidance following their son's decision to come out as gay. Brigham, who identified as a lesbian and gay liaison officer, had resigned from the police force prior to the trial, having been suspended during the investigation.

The court heard that Brigham, aged 38 and originally from Hackney in east London, attended a social gathering in Portsmouth last August. During this event, he befriended the young boy and was asked to speak with him to offer advice and support. However, the situation took a darker turn as the court was informed that the two engaged in consensual sexual acts while off duty. Prosecutor Matthew Lawson stated that Brigham had described the boy as “stunning” to others at the party, despite being aware that the boy was only 15 years old.

Further details revealed that after the party, Brigham maintained contact with the boy through text messages and via Facebook, which eventually led to the victim confiding in his family about what had transpired. The court was told that at the time of the offenses, Brigham was experiencing personal difficulties, including a breakup and significant debts, which may have influenced his actions.

Judge Roger Hetherington delivered the sentence, emphasizing the severity of the crimes. He remarked, “The offences are aggravated by the disparity of age between the two of you – you were more than twice his age. You were someone he could expect to look up to and seek guidance from.” Brigham was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and was prohibited from working with children in the future.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Dave Anderson of Hampshire police commented on the case, stating, “It’s a sad end to an officer’s career but also it will give some finalisation for the victim.” The case has left a lasting impact on the communities involved and highlights the importance of safeguarding vulnerable minors from exploitation by those in positions of authority.
