MARC BEAR SENTENCED TO 27 YEARS IN PRISON FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CORNWALL
A man identified as Marc Bear has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 27 years after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences involving children.The 38-year-old, who hails from Launceston in Cornwall, received this substantial sentence following a trial that concluded in November.
In addition to his prison term, he was also handed a one-year extension on his licence, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
The sentencing took place at Truro Crown Court on Friday, December 5.
During the proceedings, HHJ Judge Carr emphasized the gravity of Bear’s crimes, stating that he would pose a risk to children for the rest of his life.
The court heard that Bear was found guilty of a total of 16 offences committed against children, which included ten counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and two counts of causing a person to engage in sexual activity.
Despite the convictions, the jury acquitted Bear of two charges of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, one count of rape, and one count of sexual assault.
Following his conviction, the judge initially granted Bear bail to allow him time to prepare for his custodial sentence.
However, he did not remain in custody and was later located the following day in Somerset.
The judge remarked on this, indicating that Bear’s attempt to abscond was evident, stating, “that told me everything I need to know about your character.” Investigating Officer Detective Constable Tim Barbery from the Public Protection Unit described the case as highly disturbing.
He stated, “This was a highly disturbing case where the offender has exploited the vulnerability of young people for his own sexual gratification, and I welcome the sentence handed down by the judge.
This has been a protracted investigation due to the nature of the offences and the strength and bravery shown by the victims in support of the police case has been crucial.
I hope the outcome given today provides them with a small element of closure so that they can begin to move forward.”
