MALCOLM MOWBRAY SENTENCED IN MIDDLESBROUGH FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Middlesbrough, Malcolm Mowbray, a man with a dark and disturbing past, was sentenced to a decade behind bars for heinous crimes committed against a young girl over twenty years ago.The court proceedings revealed the extent of his abuse, which took place in the late 1980s when the victim was still a child.
Malcolm Mowbray, now aged 53, appeared in Teesside Crown Court visibly shaken and emotional as the verdict was delivered.
The court heard how he had repeatedly molested a pre-teen girl, a crime that had remained hidden for many years until it was finally brought to light through a detailed trial last month.
The judge, Peter Armstrong, did not hold back in condemning Mowbray’s actions, describing the abuse as the “grossest of abuse” and emphasizing how his sexual preferences had overridden any sense of decency towards the young girl.
Judge Armstrong pointed out that the girl was too young to comprehend what was happening to her at the time, but the long-lasting effects of the trauma had left her devastated.
As the court proceedings unfolded, Mowbray, who was in his 30s during the abuse, was visibly overwhelmed.
He trembled, bowed his head, and gripped the wooden bench in front of him as he listened to the details of his crimes.
When the sentence was announced, he lost his composure, crying and looking towards the public gallery with an expression of anguish.
The jury had convicted Mowbray on five counts of indecent assault following the trial.
The most serious charge, which under current law is equivalent to rape, resulted in an eight-year prison sentence.
An additional two years were added for the other charges.
The judge highlighted the emotional toll on the victim, stating, “She had to relive the ordeal.
Everyone saw the effect upon her.” He further remarked that anyone who had witnessed her giving evidence as an adult would have been deeply affected by her recounting of the abuse.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Armstrong acknowledged that, despite the severity of the crimes, reports on Mowbray’s character outside of this case had been positive, indicating a different side to him at other times.
Nevertheless, the court made it clear that the nature of the crimes warranted a lengthy custodial sentence to serve as a deterrent and to reflect the gravity of the offenses.
Prosecutor Rupert Doswell detailed the prolonged suffering endured by the young victim, emphasizing that Mowbray had convinced her that his inappropriate touching and coercion were normal.
The court was told that Mowbray had shown no remorse for his actions, and the victim was forced to relive her trauma during the trial, which visibly affected everyone present.
As part of his sentence, Mowbray, who resides in Hollowfield, Coulby Newham, was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and was prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 16.
The jury also acquitted him of three other charges of indecent assault.
Additionally, he was issued a sexual offences prevention order, which bans him from any contact with minors under 16, both measures to remain in effect indefinitely.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which the justice system treats crimes of this nature, especially those involving vulnerable children in Middlesbrough.
