MALCOLM CARNEY BINGLEY CHILD RAPIST SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON

In December 2014, Malcolm Carney, a 75-year-old man from Bingley, faced a severe legal verdict after being convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse spanning over a decade, with Carney being found guilty of 24 separate charges related to the sexual exploitation of two women.

During the trial at Bradford Crown Court, the jury unanimously agreed that Carney was responsible for eight counts of rape and sixteen counts of indecent assault, with the offenses dating back to the 1980s. The conviction marked a significant moment of justice for the victims, who, now middle-aged women, finally saw their abuser held accountable for the suffering inflicted upon them.

Malcolm Carney was visibly frail during the court proceedings, leaning heavily on his wooden walking stick as he stood in the dock. The presiding judge, Bradford’s top judicial authority, addressed him directly, stating, “One wonders if you will ever enjoy another day of freedom. You, at long last, will have to pay for the terrible things you did to those girls.” The judge’s words underscored the gravity of Carney’s crimes and the long-lasting impact on his victims.

Carney’s wife and daughter, who attended the trial throughout, appeared visibly distressed as the verdict was read, reflecting the emotional toll of the case on his family. The victims, who had endured years of silence, expressed relief and a sense of justice finally being served. Judge Roger Thomas QC, the Recorder of Bradford, acknowledged their bravery, stating, “Their powerful testimony is proof of the lasting harm child sex abusers do to their victims.”

The court heard that the victims only decided to report the abuse last year, after years of suffering in silence. They recounted how Carney physically assaulted them, often beating them with his belt, and sexually molested them on multiple occasions. One victim recounted a particularly traumatic incident where Carney assaulted her on her wedding day, groping her beneath her bridal dress and even offering her £2,000 to cancel the ceremony.

Throughout the trial, Carney maintained his innocence, denying any wrongdoing and accusing the women of fabricating stories. He claimed they had lied about other men sexually abusing them, attempting to cast doubt on their testimonies.

In her victim personal statement, one of the women described how Carney’s abuse robbed her of her childhood, leaving her with feelings of shame and dirtiness. She revealed that she still experiences panic attacks when she encounters him in everyday settings, such as supermarkets. The second woman described his crimes as “unforgivable and downright sickening,” emphasizing the profound and lasting damage caused by his actions.

Judge Thomas emphasized the courage of the victims in coming forward, highlighting that their testimonies demonstrated the enduring trauma inflicted by child sex offenders. He condemned Carney’s conduct as “disgusting, selfish, and violent,” and made it clear that his actions had caused irreparable harm.

As part of his sentence, Carney was ordered to serve 20 years in prison, a punishment reflecting the severity of his crimes. Additionally, he was mandated to register as a sex offender indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. The court’s decision sends a strong message about the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse, especially those who have endured for decades in silence.
