LYNN AND CHARLOTTE HAYDON-WILLIAMS HORROR IN HYDE: ANIMAL NEGLECT AT THE HAYWILL ANIMAL CENTRE

Lynn and Charlotte Haydon-Williams, residents of Hyde, have been found guilty of severe animal neglect charges following a detailed trial that concluded on Thursday, March 28, 2024. The case brought to light the distressing conditions of numerous animals under their care at the Haywill Animal Centre, located in Hyde, which had previously been subject to inspections by the RSPCA.

According to court proceedings and statements from RSPCA inspector Jessica Araujo, the centre was visited multiple times during 2020 and 2021, with concerns raised about the welfare of the animals housed there. Inspector Araujo recounted her visit on May 11, 2021, during which she observed a disturbing scene: goats with severely overgrown hooves struggling to walk, pigs that were grossly obese, a coatimundi in poor health with small masses on its underside, and a horse with overgrown feet. She described the animals as being in a state of neglect, with some animals showing signs of pain and suffering.

Among the animals rescued from the centre was Gemma, a grey bay mare suffering from multiple skin tumours. Sadly, veterinary advice led to the decision to euthanize her to alleviate her suffering. Casper, another horse afflicted with laminitis, was also put to sleep, along with a pot-bellied pig suffering from overgrown feet. Other animals, including an emaciated pygmy goat and the coatimundi, succumbed later due to their poor health. Several horses required urgent treatment for foot and hoof issues, highlighting the extent of neglect present at the facility.

The court heard that Lynn Haydon-Williams, born on April 6, 1960, and residing at Redgate, Hyde SK14 5DE, had previously been involved in animal rescue work and was recognized for her contributions over many years. However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic severely affected her rescue’s finances, which was cited as a reason for the decline in animal care standards. It was emphasized that her neglect was not deliberate but resulted from financial hardship and health issues.

Charlotte Haydon-Williams, born on November 17, 1988, of Cheetham Fold Road, Hyde SK14 5DF, was also involved in the care of the animals. The court acknowledged her health problems, which affected her ability to care for the horses, and accepted that she was not responsible for the neglect of the other animals. Both women faced multiple charges; Lynn initially pleaded not guilty to 15 counts but was ultimately convicted of 13. Charlotte also pleaded not guilty to 15 charges but was convicted of three related to the care of a horse, with the court ruling she had no case to answer on the remaining 12 charges.

The RSPCA confirmed that the remaining animals, including a horse and ten goats, would be rehomed to ensure their safety and well-being. Inspector Araujo expressed her disappointment, stating, “This owner was given ample time and opportunity to get the help she needed to give these animals the veterinary care and treatment they needed. Sadly, she did not take action and the animals suffered for longer than they had to.”

In sentencing, Lynn Haydon-Williams received a six-month custodial sentence suspended for 18 months, along with 240 hours of unpaid work, a fine of £240, and a victim surcharge of £156. She was also disqualified for life from keeping animals, except for dogs and cats. Charlotte Haydon-Williams was given a 12-month community order, fined £1,500, ordered to pay £1,000 in costs, and a £114 victim surcharge. Additionally, she was banned from keeping horses for three years, with the ban set to expire in March 2027. The case underscores the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect, especially in cases involving rescue centres and private owners in Hyde and surrounding areas.
