LYNDON CLEMENT FROM MAERDY SENTENCED FOR DECADE-LONG ABUSE AND RAPE OF CHILD IN MERTHYR TYDFIL
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Maerdy and the wider Merthyr Tydfil area, Lyndon Barry Clement, aged 57, has been sentenced to prison for a prolonged campaign of sexual abuse and assault against a young girl. The court proceedings revealed the disturbing details of Clement’s actions, which spanned over twelve years, beginning when the victim was only five years old.At Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, Clement faced charges that included four counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault on a female child. The prosecution outlined how Clement repeatedly subjected the young girl to sexual abuse, with the assaults continuing until she reached the age of 17. The court heard that the abuse was systematic and deeply traumatic, leaving lasting scars on the victim.
One of the pivotal moments in the case was when the victim confronted Clement about the abuse she had endured. She recorded their conversation, which subsequently served as crucial evidence during the trial. During this recorded exchange, the victim offered Clement the opportunity to surrender himself to the police. She warned him that if he chose not to do so, she would report him herself. When she questioned him about his motives, Clement shockingly admitted that he had abused her because he was not receiving intimacy from his wife, revealing a disturbing justification for his actions.
The court was also informed that Clement left two suicide notes before going into hiding following the allegations. He was later apprehended by police and charged with the offences. The emotional toll of the case was evident in a victim impact statement read aloud in court, where the young woman expressed her pain and suffering. She stated, “Every time you put your hands on me, it made me feel worthless. You sentenced me to a lifetime of mental agony. There were times I wish you had just killed me.”
In sentencing, the judge initially handed down a term of 17 years in prison. However, this was reduced to 11 years after Clement pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, demonstrating remorse. Additionally, the court imposed an extended license period of five years, ensuring close supervision upon his release. A restraining order was also issued, explicitly prohibiting Clement from making any contact with the victim, whether directly or indirectly. Furthermore, Clement was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure designed to protect the community and prevent further harm.
This case underscores the devastating impact of long-term abuse and highlights the importance of justice for victims. The community of Maerdy and the wider Merthyr Tydfil area will undoubtedly be affected by the revelations and the subsequent sentencing of Lyndon Clement.
