LUKE SMITH FROM LYDNEY JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN NEWPORT
In August 2013, Luke Smith, a 36-year-old resident of Woolaston, near Lydney, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing and downloading a significant number of indecent images of children. The case was heard at Cardiff Crown Court, where it was revealed that Smith had viewed a total of 592 illicit photographs depicting minors, some as young as four years old.The court heard that the images included 146 in the level 4 category, which involves abuse between adults and children, and two images classified as the most severe, level 5. These disturbing details emerged during the proceedings, highlighting the gravity of Smith’s offenses.
Police investigations into Smith’s activities began following an incident in Newport on September 15. During the investigation, authorities examined his computer, which confirmed the possession of these illicit images. However, it was noted that an initial allegation leading to his arrest was not pursued further at that time, as explained by Crown prosecutor Nick Gedge.
Judge Daniel Williams sentenced Smith to a total of 10 months in prison. In his remarks, the judge emphasized the seriousness of such offenses, stating, “Downloading such images I’m sure you’re aware perpetuates their market and their making. Behind each image, there is a real child and a real crime.”
Smith, who was residing at The Common, Woolaston, Lydney, Gloucestershire, admitted to 18 separate offenses committed between January 2010 and September 2012. His defense lawyer, Harry Baker, argued that Smith’s actions stemmed from browsing adult pornography, which had led him to become desensitized to the severity of his actions.
He also highlighted that Smith was a man of good character, with no prior convictions, and that he had been caring for his father, who was suffering from ill health. Despite these mitigating factors, Smith pleaded guilty to 16 counts of making indecent images of children, with sentences ranging from three to ten months for different groups of counts, all to run concurrently. Additionally, he admitted to possessing extreme pornographic images, which resulted in a three-month sentence, also concurrent, and one count of possessing indecent images of children, which carried a ten-month sentence, also to run concurrently.
Furthermore, the court imposed a sexual offences prevention order, restricting Smith’s future conduct. Judge Williams made it clear that Smith would be required to serve at least half of his sentence in custody before being eligible for release on licence, underscoring the seriousness with which the court viewed his crimes.
