LUKE SARGENT AND HIS BRUTAL CRIMES IN BIRMINGHAM AND SELLY OAK
A convicted offender, Luke Sargent, has once again caused devastation in the Birmingham area, leaving a young woman to feel as though her once-secure sense of freedom has been shattered by his heinous actions.Sargent, who had previously been convicted of a disturbing sexual assault, specifically the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Rushall on Christmas Day of 2011, had been sentenced to a six-year prison term coupled with a three-year extended license.
Despite serving his sentence, Sargent’s violent tendencies resurfaced in the early hours of June 8, when he committed another grave offense.
The evidence from CCTV footage reveals Sargent’s predatory behavior, showing him spending time in the vicinity, following groups of women as they moved about in Birmingham.
His stalking eventually culminated in an attack on a 20-year-old woman in Selly Oak as she was making her way home.
According to reports, Sargent detained her by force, dragging her into an abandoned property that was under renovation.
During this terrifying assault, he threatened her with a knife, explicitly warning that he would slit her throat.
The situation escalated rapidly as he then subjected her to a violent sexual attack.
The investigation was led by Detective Constable Andy Carnall, who highlighted the bravery of the victim in reporting her harrowing ordeal.
He remarked, “It is testament to the young woman that she bravely reported what had happened to her.
She convinced her attacker she would stay silent for just £20, hoping the note would contain his DNA, and she remembered enough details to be able to identify him in an ID parade.” The authorities were able to apprehend Sargent after he was observed by officers conducting inquiries at the renovation site, where some witnesses described him fitting the victim’s detailed account.
A further breakthrough was achieved when police recovered doorbell camera footage, which captured an audio clip of a man issuing threats to slit the woman’s throat, further implicating Sargent.
During the trial, the young woman provided an emotional impact statement, depicting her profound psychological scars.
She said: “I’ve since looked back at pictures of my friends and I out having fun the same night before I was attacked, and I just want to scream out to younger me to run, that she’s in danger, to go find safety, as she has no idea what she’s about to endure.
I was just trying to walk home.” Sargent, who resides on Cadnam Close in Birmingham, was ultimately sentenced to 18 years in prison, with a minimum of 12 years before he could apply for parole.
He will remain on licence for life and will be required to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
The severity of his punishment underscores the dangerous nature of his crimes, as emphasized by Detective Carnall, who added, “This is a significant sentence which reflects the danger Sargent poses.
I commend the young woman for her tenacity and bravery during the investigation and trial.”
