LUKE MERRY OF DONCASTER SENTENCED AFTER CINEMA SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN LEEDS AND SHEFFIELD
In a disturbing series of events that have shocked the local communities, Luke Merry, a 25-year-old man from Doncaster, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed during visits to cinemas in Leeds and Sheffield. The incidents, which occurred in April 2019, involved the targeted assault of two young girls who were innocently watching the animated film Dumbo at a Vue cinema in Leeds.
According to court reports, Merry, who resides on Lakeside Boulevard in Lakeside, Doncaster, engaged in a disturbing act of voyeurism and sexual assault by crawling underneath the rows of cinema seats.
During the screening, he reached out and groped the children, who were aged six and seven, causing one of the victims to scream and jump onto her chair in fright.
The assault was interrupted when the young girl, feeling threatened, was frightened enough to alert her mother.
When the cinema lights were turned on, witnesses were shocked to see Merry lying on the floor near the seats, close to where the girls had been assaulted.
Police were promptly called to the scene, and officers arrested Merry.
During the subsequent investigation, authorities seized his mobile phone, which revealed videos he had secretly recorded inside a female toilet at a cinema in Sheffield.
These videos included footage of a child's feet beneath a cubicle, indicating a voyeuristic intent.
Merry admitted to two counts of sexual assault on a child under 13 and one count of voyeurism.
The court learned that Merry had previously visited the same Dumbo screening twice in the week leading up to the incident, at cinemas in Castleford and Sheffield.
In his police interview, Merry explained that he traveled from his home in South Yorkshire to Leeds specifically because he liked the film Dumbo.
His criminal history includes a prior conviction for outraging public decency, after being caught performing a sex act under a computer desk at a college campus in Nottingham.
Additionally, he had been banned from the Vue cinema in Sheffield after an earlier incident where he was caught crawling under seats during a screening of How to Train Your Dragon.
He was also arrested for similar behavior at a library, where he was found under a table.
During the court proceedings at Leeds Crown Court, victim impact statements were read aloud.
The parents of the two young girls described the lasting trauma inflicted by Merry’s actions.
One child was so frightened that she refused to sleep in her own bed, fearing someone might be hiding beneath it, and she avoided returning to the cinema altogether.
The father of the other girl expressed his anguish, stating, “You hear about weird people being around but until it happens to you, you can’t put into words how it affects you as a father.” Judge Daniel Penman sentenced Merry to 18 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Furthermore, Merry will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, a measure intended to protect the community from future offenses.
This case highlights the ongoing concerns about personal safety in public spaces and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior.
