LOUIS MIRELES SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN PORTSMOUTH

In June 2019, a disturbing case involving a child sex offender from Portsmouth reached a significant legal turning point. Louis Mireles, aged 21, was found guilty of sexually assaulting a young child, an incident that has drawn considerable attention due to the severity of the crime and the subsequent legal proceedings.

According to reports, Mireles deliberately placed his hand down the child's trousers and touched their genitals, an act of sexual assault that he attempted to conceal by instructing the child to keep the incident a secret. The assault took place in Portsmouth, a city that has seen its share of challenging cases involving vulnerable victims.

Initially, Mireles appeared before Portsmouth Crown Court on 29 March, where he received a community sentence. This lenient punishment was met with criticism, prompting an appeal on the grounds that the sentence was unduly lenient given the gravity of the offense. The Court of Appeal reviewed the case and ultimately agreed with the prosecution, ruling that a custodial sentence was appropriate.

As a result, the original sentence was increased, and Mireles was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. This decision underscores the judiciary's stance on protecting children and ensuring offenders are held accountable for their actions.

Following the sentencing, the Solicitor General, Lucy Frazer QC MP, issued a statement emphasizing the seriousness of the crime. She stated, “Mireles was aware of his feelings towards children yet still sought contact – committing a crime severe enough to warrant a custodial sentence. The Court of Appeal agrees that his punishment was too lenient and the offender will now be imprisoned.”
