TIMOTHY O’KEEFE FROM NORTH OXFORD AND PORTSMOUTH JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In a case that has shocked the local communities of North Oxford and Portsmouth, Timothy O’Keefe, aged 44, was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of possessing a vast and disturbing collection of illegal child pornography.The court heard that O’Keefe’s computer and external hard drive contained a total of 9,988 illicit images and videos, with a significant number classified as the most severe level of child exploitation material.
Specifically, 230 of these images and videos were rated at level five, indicating the most serious and heinous category of child pornography, while an additional 2,042 were classified at level four.
The sheer volume and severity of these images underscored the gravity of his offenses.
O’Keefe had earlier admitted to four counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possessing such images, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing at Oxford Crown Court.
During the proceedings, the court was informed that O’Keefe was a lonely individual who often fantasized about being someone he was not.
Prosecutor Matthew Walsh described how O’Keefe was aware of the police’s visit to his residence on Hawksmoor Road in North Oxford, where officers arrived to investigate allegations related to his possession of illegal images.
When confronted, O’Keefe reportedly told officers, “Just take the hard drive, that’s what you’re looking for,” indicating a recognition of his illicit activities.
It was also revealed that a folder on his computer, containing more than 5,000 images, was viewed by “three or four other people,” suggesting that O’Keefe shared or discussed these images with others.
The court heard that after his initial arrest, O’Keefe later moved to Portsmouth, although the investigation continued to reveal the extent of his illegal collection.
Henry James, representing O’Keefe, described his client’s life as ‘piteous’ and noted that he had recently been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, which may have contributed to his actions.
The court was told that O’Keefe accessed these illicit images through online message boards, which he used as his primary means of contact with the outside world.
Prosecutor Walsh explained that these online interactions served as an outlet for O’Keefe, allowing him to indulge in his disturbing fantasies and connect with others who shared similar interests.
Historically, O’Keefe was not new to the criminal justice system, having previously served a 12-count sentence for theft in 1989.
The judge, Christopher Compston, delivered a stern warning about the nature of the images involved.
He stated, “The children are grossly abused to make the photographs upon which he and his companions then look.
You can’t have one without the other.” Concluding his remarks, Judge Compston emphasized the severity of the case, saying, “I’m going to have to send you immediately to prison, I have absolutely no option.
Level four and level five images are really very grim as you well know and there are far too many images.” The sentence reflects the court’s condemnation of the heinous crimes committed by Timothy O’Keefe, whose actions have caused significant harm and distress to the victims depicted in these illegal materials.
