HUDDERSFIELD WOMAN DISQUALIFIED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS AFTER NEGLECTING HER PET CAT
A pensioner who failed to look after her cat Charlie properly has been disqualified from keeping animals.Lorraine Popli, 68, of Hazel Grove, Linthwaite, pleaded guilty at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court to failing to obtain the necessary dental care for her 11-year-old black and white cat between September 1, 2014 and December 10, 2014.
She appeared in court with a social worker to assist her.
She had looked after the cat since he was a kitten, but his health declined after she was struggling financially, was isolated, and on her own.
The cat developed gingivitis, a painful condition requiring expensive treatment estimated at £200 involving a general anaesthetic.
The vet estimated that the cat had advanced fractures to numerous teeth, which had to be placed under general anaesthetic to alleviate suffering.
The RSPCA confirmed the cat has made a good recovery after treatment.
Mr Brown, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, said she had signed over Charlie, and she accepted that she was not able to look after pets, describing it as a short term neglect case.
District Judge Michael Fanning stated: “I have to ban you from keeping animals.
This situation got out of hand.
Charlie will not have been a happy cat for that time.”
