LORRAINE GEORGE'S HORRIFIC CAT CRUELTY IN CHRISTCHURCH REVEALED

Lorraine Jane George, born on May 19, 1959, and residing on Freshwater Road in Christchurch, has been found guilty of severe animal neglect involving dozens of Persian cats kept in deplorable conditions. The case came to light after RSPCA officers, accompanied by Dorset Police, visited her property on March 8, 2023, uncovering a scene of utter chaos and squalor that was detrimental to the health and well-being of the animals.

Upon entering George’s home, investigators discovered that the entire ground floor was nearly inaccessible due to an overwhelming accumulation of clutter, including boxes and parcels stacked from floor to ceiling. The narrow walkway through the hallway led to the kitchen, where the sound of cats calling out could be heard echoing throughout the house. The air was thick with a foul, ammonia-like stench, making it impossible to access the living and dining rooms, which were also overwhelmed with belongings.

Inspectors found George asleep on the floor of a bedroom, while her bathroom and an ensuite were occupied by numerous cats. The conditions inside the property were appalling; there were no clean facilities available, and the entire residence appeared to have transformed from a home into a storage unit. The situation was so dire that the inspectors described the property as barely functioning as a living space.

In total, RSPCA officers removed 29 Persian cats from six different areas within the house. These animals were taken to a mobile veterinary unit for assessment and treatment. The veterinary examination revealed that the cats were suffering from multiple health issues, including eye infections, respiratory illnesses, flea infestations, severely matted fur, and in some cases, emaciation. Two of the cats had ingrown claws, and others were found to have dental problems. Tragically, one of the cats was so unwell that it had to be euthanized to end its suffering.

Veterinarians highlighted that the living conditions were grossly inadequate for the cats’ needs. The enclosures were overcrowded, with poor ventilation and hygiene, which contributed to the high incidence of infectious diseases. Food and water supplies were insufficient; food bowls were dirty and empty, and litter trays were inadequate for the number of cats. The environment lacked any form of enrichment, further compromising the animals’ welfare.

One of the bedrooms where some cats were kept was excessively hot, with poor airflow, and the veterinarian noted fecal staining on furniture, windowsills, bookshelves, and bedside cabinets. The smell in this room was described as horrific. Among George’s possessions were numerous sacks of cat and dog food and litter, most of which had remained unopened, indicating a lack of proper care and attention.

Despite previous interventions, the RSPCA had offered to rehome George’s cats in 2015 and provided her with advice during earlier visits. George claimed that some of the cats appeared thin due to feline flu, and she also stated that she had spent seven days in hospital in 2022, during which a friend helped care for the animals. The court was informed of her infirmity as part of her mitigation.

In total, the RSPCA removed 29 Persian cats from her residence. All of these animals were treated for their ailments, although one had to be euthanized due to her critical condition. The remaining cats are now under the care of the charity and will be rehomed once they recover.

Judge HHJ Fuller, KC, sentenced George to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered her to pay costs amounting to £53,275.78. Additionally, she received a ten-year ban on owning cats. The judge condemned her for her prolonged neglect and obstinate refusal to accept advice, emphasizing that the conditions she allowed to develop were obvious to any competent pet owner. The court described her behavior as a case of deliberate disregard, driven by obsession and obstinacy rather than incompetence.

Following the sentencing, RSPCA inspector Patrick Bailey stated that the organization strives to educate owners about proper animal care before resorting to legal action. Although George owns three dogs, they appeared to be in good condition, and she was only banned from keeping cats. Inspectors repeatedly urged her to reduce her cat numbers, seek veterinary assistance promptly, and consider euthanasia when necessary, but she failed to act in the best interests of her animals, leading to this severe outcome.
