BLACKPOOL MAN LLIAM SWAYNE SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS AND 8 MONTHS FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE IN CUMBRIA
A resident of Blackpool, Lliam Swayne, aged 33, has been sentenced to a prison term of three years and eight months following a series of serious criminal offences committed against a woman in North Cumbria. The sentencing took place at Carlisle Crown Court, where Swayne was found guilty of multiple charges that highlight a pattern of coercive control, physical violence, criminal damage, and intimidation. The offences, which occurred between April and August 2023, involved a single female victim and spanned a range of abusive behaviors that severely impacted her well-being. Swayne’s actions included coercive and controlling conduct, which is recognized as a serious form of domestic abuse, designed to dominate and manipulate the victim’s life. Additionally, he was convicted of assault by beating, which resulted in injuries such as broken ribs, and criminal damage, further demonstrating the extent of his violent and destructive behavior.
One of the most troubling aspects of the case was Swayne’s attempt to intimidate the victim in connection with civil proceedings. This involved threatening messages and actions intended to instill fear and silence her. As part of the court’s ruling, Swayne was also issued an indefinite restraining order, prohibiting him from contacting or approaching the victim in any way, to ensure her safety moving forward.
Detective Constable Danielle Messenger from Cumberland CID provided a statement emphasizing the severity of Swayne’s conduct. She explained that Swayne subjected the victim to numerous threatening messages and physical assaults, with one assault resulting in broken ribs. She detailed how Swayne’s controlling behavior extended to making the victim Facetime him to prove she was in her hotel room during her holiday nights, along with multiple threats of violence directed at her and her family.
DC Messenger described Swayne’s actions as “truly despicable and damaging,” noting that his behavior led to the victim losing contact with her friends and experiencing significant emotional distress. She also acknowledged the difficulty victims face when speaking out about abuse, reaffirming the police’s commitment to handling such cases with professionalism and sensitivity. The police work closely with partner agencies to ensure victims receive appropriate support tailored to their individual circumstances.
The authorities made it clear that domestic abuse will not be tolerated in Cumbria. They are committed to holding offenders accountable and ensuring justice is served. Detective Constable Messenger urged anyone who has experienced domestic abuse to come forward and report it, assuring victims that they will be supported throughout the investigation process.
