LIAM ROTHERY AND CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN CUMBRIA

A man from Whitehaven, Cumbria, named Liam Rothery, has been involved in a disturbing case of child abuse imagery, leading to serious legal consequences.

The incident came to light after Rothery, who was already serving a community order for possession of child abuse images, committed a similar offence within a year of his initial sentencing.

Details of the case reveal that Rothery, 34 years old, managed to download and possess 23 indecent images of children classified under Category C, the least severe category of such illicit material.

The seriousness of this offence was emphasized during proceedings at Carlisle Crown Court, where Prosecutor Gerard Rogerson presented the case facts.

Rothery’s prior conviction stemmed from a sentencing in August 2020, where he was subjected to a three-year community order.

This order mandated participation in rehabilitation programs, including a sex offender treatment regime, highlighting the severity of his previous offending behavior.

However, less than a year later, in April 2021, police officers visited Rothery’s residence unannounced due to suspicions related to the delivery of unspecified 'equipment' to his home.

Although initial concerns about the equipment were not substantiated, law enforcement officers requested Rothery to surrender his Apple iPhone for inspection.

During a forensic analysis of his device, authorities discovered a bookmark linked to a website known for sharing illegal child images.

Mr.

Rogerson described the website as appearing to be of Eastern European or Russian origin, indicating possible sources of the illicit material.

Further examination of Rothery’s phone revealed that he had actively downloaded and stored 23 images depicting child abuse.

When questioned during police interviews, Rothery did not respond or provide any explanations, choosing to remain silent.

The evidence collected also indicated that Rothery conducted deliberate and systematic searches for images of young children, with some of those illegal images being saved on his device.

This pattern of activity underlined his continued engagement in the possession of such material.

Despite the disturbing nature of these offences, Judge Nicholas Barker commented on the timing and handling of Rothery’s case.

The judge expressed confusion over why it took the police two years to formally charge Rothery, especially considering his previous conviction and ongoing rehabilitation efforts.

The judge pointed out that if the case had been prosecuted earlier, the outcome might have been different, and Rothery’s attitude might have been less rehabilitative.

Nevertheless, the court acknowledged that during the two-year suspension period, Rothery participated fully in the sex offender treatment program and cooperated with the Probation Service.

His positive pre-sentence report and the lack of any subsequent offences were taken into account by Judge Barker.

Consequently, Rothery was sentenced to an 18-month community order, which includes 20 days of rehabilitative activities, and was subjected to an eight-week curfew from 6 pm to 6 am.

Additionally, the court stipulated that Rothery would be required to register as a sex offender for a duration of five years, marking the legal system’s ongoing monitoring of his activities to prevent future offences.
