LEWIS BARCLAY FROM LERWICK SHEETLAND ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SENDING INDECENT MESSAGES TO UNDERAGE GIRLS

In December 2020, a troubling case emerged from Lerwick, Shetland, involving a young man named Lewis Barclay who engaged in inappropriate and sexual communications with underage girls through social media. The incident drew significant attention at Lerwick Sheriff Court, where Barclay, aged 19 and residing on Commercial Road, faced serious charges related to his conduct.

Barclay had previously admitted to four separate charges, which included sending explicit photographs of himself in a state of undress and requesting similar images from the girls he targeted. The victims, all between the ages of 13 and 16, reported feeling uncomfortable and distressed by his actions. The offences spanned a period from May 1 of the previous year to January 1, 2020, when Barclay was 17 and 18 years old, indicating a pattern of predatory behavior over several months.

During the court proceedings, defence solicitor Tommy Allan emphasized that Barclay’s actions were driven by naivety and a lack of maturity. He argued that these factors contributed significantly to his client’s involvement in such inappropriate conduct. Allan also highlighted the personal consequences faced by Barclay, noting that he had already lost his job and potentially his future career prospects as a direct result of his misconduct.

Sheriff Robert McDonald addressed the court, underscoring the gravity of the offences. He made it clear that Barclay should understand the seriousness of his actions and the potential for a custodial sentence. Instead of sending him to prison, the sheriff imposed a sentence of 160 hours of unpaid community work and placed Barclay under supervision for a period of two years. The sheriff clarified that this sentence was given as an alternative to incarceration, reflecting a balance between punishment and rehabilitation.

Overall, the case highlights the ongoing concerns about online safety and the exploitation of minors, especially in small communities like Lerwick, Shetland. The court’s decision aims to serve as a warning to others about the consequences of such inappropriate online behavior, while also emphasizing the importance of maturity and responsibility in digital interactions.
