LESLEY EVANS FROM COLWYN BAY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND BANNED FROM CONTACT WITH MINORS

In a serious case heard in Llandudno, Leslie Gerald Evans, aged 46 and a resident of Colwyn Bay, was subjected to a court order following his conviction for child-related offences. The magistrates' court was informed that Evans had previously served a two-year prison sentence in 2002 after police discovered over 1,000 indecent photographs depicting children. Despite the conviction, the court decided that Evans could be named publicly, but his exact home address was to remain confidential to protect his privacy and security.

According to Karen Seymour, representing North Wales Police, Evans' conduct after his release in 2003 raised significant concerns. It was reported that shortly after being released, Evans had formed relationships with minors, specifically befriending a 12-year-old boy and a girl aged between 14 and 15. Such associations were deemed a breach of the conditions of his license, which led to his re-imprisonment. Seymour emphasized the gravity of the situation by citing an expert report indicating that, without a court order, there was a 33% chance of Evans being convicted of further offences within the next five years.

Graham Parry, acting as Evans' legal representative, maintained that his client denied the original allegations and suggested that there might be grounds for an appeal. The court, however, showed no opposition to the proposed restrictions, provided some wording adjustments were made to the order. Court chairman Anne Roberts explained that the primary purpose of the order was to safeguard the public from potential harm.

The court's order explicitly prohibits Evans from allowing anyone under the age of 16 to enter his residence or any premises under his control. It also forbids him from entering any house where children are present unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Furthermore, Evans is barred from engaging in any form of communication or contact with children, except for incidental or unavoidable interactions that occur in daily life. The order also restricts him from participating in any paid or unpaid work involving children under 16, whether as an employee or under supervision. These restrictions do not apply when he is with family members in the presence of a parent or guardian.

Additionally, Evans is required to inform the police of any change of address or plans to travel abroad, ensuring ongoing monitoring and control of his movements. The court's decision underscores the seriousness of his past actions and the need for ongoing supervision to prevent any future harm to minors.

In a related case from June 2002, Evans, then aged 42 and residing on Hawarden Road in Colwyn Bay, was convicted of possessing indecent images of children. He was sentenced to two years in prison at Chester Crown Court after a jury found him guilty on 13 counts related to such material. Despite his conviction, Evans continued to deny the charges, but Judge Roger Dutton emphasized the compelling evidence against him. The judge described the images as depicting some of the most disturbing acts involving children, including a young child, possibly only two or three years old, crying during a sexual act.

Judge Dutton expressed his disapproval of Evans' interest in such material, noting that while Evans was not a photographer nor had direct access to children, his unhealthy fascination with minors was evident. The judge highlighted that Evans' failure to accept responsibility was a significant factor, and he warned that only a custodial sentence could adequately reflect the severity of the offences and serve as a deterrent to others.

Consequently, Evans was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and will be registered as a sex offender for the next decade, emphasizing the court's commitment to protecting children and punishing those who exploit or endanger them.
