LEE MCCUTCHEON SENTENCED IN CARLISLE FOR BRUTAL ATTACK AND ABUSE

A man described as controlling and dangerously violent has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after a horrifying assault on his partner in Carlisle. Lee McCutcheon, aged 28, carried out a series of brutal acts that left his partner severely injured and traumatized, culminating in him deliberately pouring boiling water over her head.

On the evening of March 17, McCutcheon returned to the flat he shared with his girlfriend in the Stonegarth area of Carlisle after taking heroin and cocaine. An argument ensued when he accused her of theft, a claim she firmly denied. The confrontation quickly escalated into violence, with McCutcheon punching her in the head and dragging her around the flat by her hair. Witnesses present during the incident described another man’s involvement, who refused to join in the violence but observed the assault. This man later referred to the attack as “kneecapping.”

In a particularly sadistic act, McCutcheon retrieved a wooden mallet and attacked his partner with it. The woman was left badly hurt, and her injuries were so severe that she later recounted to a nurse how McCutcheon calmly approached a microwave, boiled water for two minutes, and then poured it over her head. He even boasted that he had added sugar to the water before pouring it, and paused midway through to observe her reaction. The assault caused her scalp to bleed and blister, with large sections of her hair cut away during medical treatment.

The woman, who was wearing a dressing gown at the time, was seen by police to be “hysterically crying and shaking” after the attack. She managed to escape through a first-floor window, fleeing the scene in a state of shock. An accomplice, who followed her outside, found that the door to the flat was locked, preventing her from leaving immediately. She was subsequently taken by ambulance to a hospital in Newcastle, where she was admitted to a specialist burns unit for a week. Medical examinations revealed that her head and shoulder burns covered approximately 10 percent of her body, with bleeding and blistering on her scalp and significant hair loss.

Initially, the woman told police and medical staff that McCutcheon was responsible for her injuries. However, during the court proceedings, she changed her account, claiming she had inflicted the injuries upon herself. McCutcheon faced multiple charges, including causing grievous bodily harm with intent, false imprisonment on two counts, and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Prosecutors accused him of conspiring with a 33-year-old man named Christopher Lowe to interfere with the investigation by persuading the woman and the other man present that night not to cooperate with police.

After a trial, the jury unanimously found McCutcheon guilty of all charges. In sentencing him, Recorder Jeremy Lasker emphasized the severity of his actions, stating, “You subjected her to a sustained and wholly gratuitous assault.” The judge also described McCutcheon as “a very dangerous man indeed,” and imposed an extended four-year license period alongside the prison sentence.

McCutcheon’s case highlights the brutal nature of domestic violence and the devastating impact it can have on victims. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness with which such crimes are treated in Carlisle and underscores the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their violent actions.
