MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR MURDERING MOTHER IN CORNWALL AFTER SYSTEMIC FAILINGS

Lee Kendall, a 45-year-old man, was convicted of murdering Michaela Hall by stabbing her in the eye on 31 May 2021.

Mr Cox, the coroner, described the case as a result of serious failings by various agencies, stating "shortcomings and errors" by probation services occurred before her death.

The report indicates Kendall was an alcoholic and former drug addict who had a history of violence against Ms Hall, with multiple attacks reported to police prior to the murder.

Kendall was initially released from prison in July 2020 despite concerns about his risk, and in April 2021, he admitted to two assaults on Michaela Hall, subsequently receiving a three-year community order.

The inquest revealed that Kendall had been repeatedly violent towards Ms Hall, including during the days leading up to her death.

Despite police efforts and referrals to high-risk assessment conferences, the evidence suggests that systemic failures contributed to Ms Hall's tragic demise.

Kendall was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years for the murder.

The case highlights issues with the management and assessment of offenders with violent histories, emphasizing the need for a more holistic approach to such cases.
