DARLINGTON MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULTING AND INJURING GIRLFRIEND IN ALCOHOL-FUELED ATTACK
A man named Lee Cowen, from Whitby Way, Darlington, was convicted for assault occasioning actual bodily harm after he physically attacked his girlfriend. The incident involved Cowen punching and kicking his partner as she lay on the ground, and he also threw a beer can at her head.
The attack was described as a "sustained and repeated" assault in which the woman suffered a cut to her eye.
Witnesses, including a friend of the victim, stated that they feared for her life, as the woman was in fear that she might be killed.
Both Cowen and the victim were said to be dependent on alcohol, which contributed to the incident.
The attack took place on July 20 in the street in Darlington, during which the woman grabbed Cowen’s legs causing him to lose his balance, but he continued his rage, pulling her to the ground and continuing his violence.
Cowen expressed regret for his actions and accepted he and his partner both had drinking problems.
The court, presided over by Judge Simon Bourne-Arton at Teesside Crown Court, sentenced Cowen to 14 months in jail, emphasizing that the courts would not tolerate such violence.
The judge also noted that argument and violence often occur when Cowen drinks, illustrating the dangerous cycle of alcohol dependency and violence.
Cowen's actions reflect a serious domestic violence offense, and the court response highlights the severity with which such cases are treated.
