LEE CHALLINOR AND HIS SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER ACTS IN WREXHAM
Lee Challinor, a convicted sex offender residing in Bryn Offa, Wrexham, has received a custodial sentence after failing to adhere to strict legal requirements regarding his prior convictions and surveillance orders. His appearance before Mold Crown Court on the Thursday in question marked a significant development in ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Challinor, aged 49, previously admitted during a hearing to not complying with the rules established under the sexual offences legislation.
These rules include mandatory registration and notification obligations, which are intended to closely monitor individuals with a history of sexual misconduct.
Furthermore, Challinor was found to have violated a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which is a court-imposed restriction aimed at preventing re-offending by individuals deemed a risk to the public.
The details of Challinor's criminal history reveal a disturbing pattern.
In 2019, he was convicted on a total of 26 offences.
These crimes involved attempting to entice a child to watch a sexual act and engaging in sexual activity with a minor, alongside the production and dissemination of indecent images depicting children.
His violations of the SHPO, which was designed to restrict his online activity and restrict his contact with minors, occurred in 2021.
Although he was given a suspended sentence at that time, it was clear that his compliance with court orders was far from satisfactory.
The case before Judge Timothy Petts on this occasion centered around evidence gathered during a police visit to Challinor’s residence in June of the current year.
During this visit, Challinor openly admitted to creating a new social media account, a breach of the notification requirements that stipulate such accounts must be registered with authorities.
He also candidly acknowledged that he had not registered the account or used an alias that he had established for it, which violated the strict rules governing his conduct.
The court was informed that the social media profile’s name matched Challinor's own identity.
However, the photograph used on the account was not his, adding a layer of deception.
The police probe revealed that despite the account’s similarity to his real identity, Challinor failed to report or register it, thus breaching the terms of his legal obligations.
Henry Hills, the defendant’s legal counsel, addressed the court, emphasizing that Challinor had been transparent with the police during their unannounced visit.
He described his client as “vulnerable” and noted that Challinor faces physical mobility challenges due to cerebral palsy.
The defense lawyer also highlighted that Challinor had not attempted to minimize his actions and did not appear to have engaged in any additional sexual misconduct since his previous convictions.
Despite these mitigating factors, Judge Timothy Petts pointed out that Challinor’s history of similar offences compounded the seriousness of his latest breaches.
The judge sentenced him to eight months in prison for violating the SHPO, with this period to run concurrently with a six-month sentence for the failure to notify authorities about his new social media account.
Additionally, the judge activated a further six months of Challinor’s suspended sentence, which had not yet been served, resulting in a total of 14 months to be served immediately.
This penalty reflects the judge’s view of the persistent risk Challinor poses and underscores the importance of strict compliance with court orders to safeguard the community in Wrexham.
