LEED'S LEE BRADLEY BANNED FOR CRUELTY TO LABRADOR PUPPY THEO
In March 2021, a disturbing case of animal abuse emerged from Leeds involving a man named Lee Bradley, who was found guilty of inflicting severe injuries on a young Labrador puppy named Theo. The incident, which spanned over a four-week period from December 23, 2019, to January 21, 2020, shocked the local community and prompted a thorough investigation by the RSPCA.
Lee Bradley, aged 40 and residing on Ascot Road in Kippax, was subjected to legal proceedings after it was established that he had caused significant harm to Theo, a helpless and vulnerable puppy.
The abuse was characterized by violent and cruel acts that resulted in the puppy suffering from multiple rib fractures, some of which were recent, while others were at different stages of healing, indicating repeated trauma.
Veterinary examinations revealed that Theo had sustained trauma to his chest area, with x-rays confirming the presence of 30 fractured ribs.
Specifically, six of these fractures were recent, causing the puppy considerable pain and difficulty breathing.
The vets also discovered that Theo had previously suffered 24 fractured ribs on both sides of his chest, which had been at various stages of healing, suggesting ongoing abuse rather than a single incident.
Despite the severity of Theo’s injuries, Lee Bradley initially denied any knowledge of how the injuries might have occurred.
When questioned by the veterinarian, he claimed that Theo might have been injured when a bin liner filled with books fell on him.
However, this explanation was inconsistent with the injuries observed, leading to further suspicion.
The RSPCA Inspector Danielle Grimshaw, who led the investigation, was alerted to the case and promptly arranged for police to seize Theo.
The puppy was taken to a veterinary clinic for a comprehensive clinical examination, which confirmed that the injuries were consistent with physical abuse and non-accidental trauma.
The evidence pointed strongly to deliberate harm inflicted by Bradley.
Following the investigation, Lee Bradley was brought before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.
He appeared there to face charges and ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, as well as a charge of failing to meet the needs of the animal.
The court heard that the abuse had taken place over a period of four weeks.
In sentencing, the court imposed a series of penalties designed to prevent future harm and to hold Bradley accountable.
He was handed an indefinite ban on keeping any animals, a restriction that he cannot appeal for five years.
Additionally, he received a 12-month Community Order requiring him to complete 300 hours of unpaid work within the community.
The court also ordered him to pay costs amounting to £300 and a victim surcharge of £90.
Furthermore, a deprivation order was placed on Theo, allowing the RSPCA to find him a new, loving home where he can recover and thrive.
During the investigation, Theo remained in RSPCA care and has since made a full recovery from his injuries, a testament to the dedicated efforts of the animal welfare organization.
This case highlights the ongoing issue of animal cruelty in Leeds and underscores the importance of vigilant enforcement and community awareness to protect vulnerable animals from harm.
