LEE ASHURST FROM GILLINGHAM SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR APPALLING SEXUAL ABUSE OF TWO YOUNG GIRLS

In April 2013, a man from Gillingham, identified as Lee Ashurst, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 16 years after being convicted of carrying out heinous and depraved sexual offenses against two young girls. The court heard that Ashurst, aged 29 and residing on Parr Avenue in Gillingham, had engaged in a series of disturbing acts that left a lasting impact on his victims.

During the trial, the judge, Jeremy Carey, delivered a stern warning to Ashurst, stating, "You chose to oppose these matters and have been convicted. You can expect and receive no mercy from this court." Despite denying six charges of child rape, Ashurst was found guilty of each by a narrow majority verdict of 10-2.

The case was further complicated by the involvement of Ashurst’s brother, Matthew Ashurst, who, in October 2005, had lured a young boy away from his home in Gillingham and subjected him to sexual assault. Matthew Ashurst received a sentence of 15 months in youth custody for his actions.

Throughout the proceedings, the jury, composed of nine women and three men, listened to harrowing testimonies from the two young girls. They recounted in graphic detail the depraved sexual behaviors inflicted upon them by Lee Ashurst. The judge emphasized the severity of the crimes, stating, "Each of them described how you indulged yourself in the most appalling way. In their innocence, they did not realize, and still do not realize, the enormity of the depravity of which you are now rightly found guilty."

He further explained that the impact on the victims would be profound and enduring, warning that the shock waves from this case would be felt by their families for many years to come. The judge highlighted the gravity of the offenses, noting that the victims’ innocence made the betrayal even more devastating.

Following the verdict, Ashurst’s legal representative described the crimes as "horrific and appalling." It was also noted that Ashurst, who is believed to have a low IQ, would be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and would be prohibited from working with children or vulnerable adults.

After Ashurst was led away to begin his sentence, Judge Carey addressed the jury, one of whom was visibly emotional and wept. The judge expressed his appreciation for their service, acknowledging the ordeal they had endured. He remarked, "This case must have put you through an ordeal. It is your misfortune you had to sit on this case. Others have been through the ordeal you have had to go through."

He concluded by reassuring the jury that justice had been served, advising them to try to forget the details of the case as best they could, and emphasizing the importance of their role in upholding justice in such grave matters.
