MIDDLESBROUGH MAN LAURENCE TOMLINSON CAUGHT WITH CHILDLIKE DOLL AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Middlesbrough, Laurence Tomlinson, a 30-year-old resident of Portman Street, was found to have engaged in highly illegal and morally reprehensible activities involving a childlike sex doll and indecent images of children. The incident came to light in February 2020 when police received a tip-off about his possession of a doll designed to resemble a young girl, approximately three to four years old.
Following the tip, law enforcement officers conducted a thorough investigation and discovered that Tomlinson had imported the doll illegally.
The doll, which stood about one metre tall, was intended for sexual purposes, and its design was explicitly childlike, raising serious concerns about his intentions and mental health.
An examination of the doll confirmed that it had been used by Tomlinson for his own sexual gratification, which is a grave violation of legal and moral boundaries.
During the investigation, authorities also uncovered a troubling collection of indecent images stored on his devices.
These included four Category A images, which are considered the most severe, ten Category B images, 28 Category C images, and four prohibited images of children.
The presence of such material further underscored the severity of his offending behavior.
Rachel Masters, prosecuting, explained that Tomlinson initially denied owning the childlike doll but eventually led officers to its hiding place beneath his bed.
She emphasized that the doll was being used explicitly for sexual purposes.
Despite his claims that he did not have a sexual interest in children, the evidence suggested otherwise.
The court was shown email correspondence between Tomlinson and the company from which he purchased the doll, and Judge Stephen Ashurst noted that these communications left little doubt about the nature of the items being discussed.
Further investigation revealed that Tomlinson had used internet search terms commonly associated with offenders of this nature, indicating a pattern of behavior and intent.
The court heard that he had checked the legality of the doll prior to purchase, yet he maintained that he did not have a sexual interest in children, a claim that was heavily scrutinized given the evidence.
In court, Tomlinson pleaded guilty to importing prohibited goods and to four counts related to indecent images of children.
Judge Ashurst sentenced him to 14 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to register as a sex offender for ten years.
The judge remarked on Tomlinson’s honesty about his motives, stating, "You were candid enough to say to the Probation Service that the purpose of buying this item was for your personal sexual gratification.
You have acknowledged that you do have a sexual interest in children, particularly those aged between six and eight." This case highlights the ongoing issues surrounding the illegal importation of childlike sex dolls and the possession of child exploitation material, raising serious concerns about the safety and well-being of children in the community of Middlesbrough and beyond.
