KYLE SWEET FROM BLACKPOOL ESCAPES JAIL AFTER ONLINE GROOMING OF SCHOOLGIRLS
In August 2019, a disturbing case involving a teenage male from Blackpool, Kyle Sweet, came to light, revealing a pattern of online grooming and inappropriate communications with underage girls.Despite the severity of his actions, Sweet was spared imprisonment, with the court opting for a community-based sentence, citing concerns about the challenges of incarceration for him.
Sweet, aged 19 at the time, had engaged in explicit online chats with four girls aged between 13 and 14 over a period spanning from 2017 to 2019.
The police investigation was triggered when a mother in Blackpool discovered her 13-year-old daughter had been exchanging explicit images and messages with Sweet.
However, initially, authorities decided not to press charges, as Sweet had not directly solicited the images, and the communication was deemed less straightforward.
It was only in December 2019 that Sweet was finally arrested following explicit exchanges with one of the victims.
During the investigation, police uncovered that he had also targeted two of her friends, both also aged 14, with whom he continued to communicate sexually.
The court heard that Sweet had sent a girl a photograph of his genitals and a video of himself masturbating, along with messages asking for sexual acts and describing what he would do to her.
One of the victims, after her mother discovered the messages, took control of her phone, which led to further revelations.
Sweet, believing he was communicating with the girl, had actually been messaging her mother, which added a layer of complexity to the case.
Additionally, Sweet had developed relationships with two other girls, sending them explicit images and engaging in sexual conversations.
One of these girls received a picture of his erect penis and was invited to meet him, though the meeting never materialized.
Throughout the legal proceedings, the court was informed that Sweet had been remanded in custody, where he faced further difficulties.
He was targeted by other inmates, with one fellow prisoner pestering him for sexual favors, highlighting the risks and vulnerabilities he faced while incarcerated.
Judge Andrew Woolman acknowledged Sweet’s difficult teenage years and the time he had spent in prison, which he said allowed him to reflect on the gravity of his actions.
The judge noted that although prison officers attempted to protect him, they could not do so entirely.
In his sentencing, Judge Woolman decided that a community order was the most appropriate course of action, emphasizing that the public and Sweet’s future well-being would benefit from this approach.
He warned Sweet that any breach of the community order would result in a return to prison.
Furthermore, Sweet was ordered to register as a sex offender and was given a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibits him from contacting children.
The court’s decision underscores the serious nature of online grooming and the importance of safeguarding minors from exploitation, even when the offender is a young adult from Blackpool.
