In May 2021, a disturbing case involving Kwamin Mercer, a 39-year-old man from Corporation Street, Birmingham, came to light when he was sentenced to prison for targeting women traveling alone on West Midlands trains.Mercer was convicted after a trial at Birmingham Crown Court and sentenced to four years in prison.

The court details revealed that Mercer’s first victim was targeted on the evening of September 3, 2020, as her train departed Birmingham.
He approached her while she was alone, sat opposite her, and then leaned forward, inappropriately touching her.
She quickly moved away, after which Mercer placed his hands in his trouser pockets and appeared to masturbate.
The following morning, between 7 am and 9 am, Mercer assaulted four additional women with inappropriate touches aboard services traveling between various stations across the West Midlands.
Among these victims was a 15-year-old girl en route to school with friends.
All victims reported Mercer’s conduct to British Transport Police via its text-to-report service, 61016.
