GATESHEAD PAEDOPHILE KIERON OLIVER CONFRONTED BY VIGILANTES AT BUS STATION

In May 2020, a disturbing incident unfolded at Gateshead involving a known sex offender, Kieron Oliver, who was confronted by vigilant members of a paedophile hunting group.

The confrontation took place at Gateshead bus station, where Oliver had arranged to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl, with the intent of engaging in sexual activity.

This meeting was part of an undercover operation conducted by the Child Online Safety Team (COST), a volunteer group dedicated to identifying and exposing individuals seeking to exploit minors online.

Oliver, aged 22 and residing in Braeside, Dunston, Gateshead, was already on the sex offenders' register due to a prior conviction for sexually assaulting a four-year-old child.

His previous criminal record also included breaches of a sexual harm prevention order, which was part of his rehabilitation process.

Despite these restrictions, Oliver continued to seek out minors online, demonstrating a pattern of concerning behavior.

According to court proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, Oliver had exchanged explicit messages with what he believed was a teenage girl, discussing topics such as 'teaching' her and how to prevent her from becoming pregnant.

During these exchanges, he expressed a desire to bring a friend along to the meeting, which he believed was with a girl named 'Lauren.' On the day of the incident, Oliver arrived at Gateshead bus station accompanied by another man, whom he referred to as a friend.

The group had been lured into the trap set by COST, who had created a decoy profile on social media to attract individuals seeking to exploit minors.

When Oliver arrived, he was immediately confronted by members of the vigilante group, who filmed the encounter for evidence.

Realizing that police officers, who had been alerted by COST, were present and waiting for him, Oliver attempted to flee the scene.

However, he was quickly detained and arrested by law enforcement officials.

During police interviews, Oliver maintained that he believed he was meeting a girl over 13, and his friend echoed this sentiment, claiming they thought the girl was of legal age.

The court heard that Oliver's actions were part of a disturbing pattern of behavior.

Five years prior, he had been convicted of sexually assaulting a four-year-old child and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order.

Despite this, he breached the order in the following year by repeatedly asking a 15-year-old girl to go out with him.

Later that same year, he was convicted of common assaults after physically attacking two teenagers at a funfair.

In February of the year the incident occurred, COST had set up a fake profile on the social media platform Skout, which is known for its use among individuals seeking to contact minors.

The group actively seeks out those attempting to engage with children online.

Oliver initially arranged to meet the girl at the Metro Centre and even suggested they could go to his flat to 'chill.' However, he became spooked upon seeing police officers and left the scene.

Following the failed meeting, Oliver messaged the decoy profile, asking if she had called the police.

The group reported that he appeared to accept the denial and continued messaging.

The second planned meeting was scheduled for two days later at Gateshead bus station.

During this encounter, Oliver arrived with another male, attempted to run when he saw the police, and was quickly detained.

During police interviews, Oliver claimed he believed the girl he was supposed to meet was over 13.

His friend, who was also arrested, made similar assertions.

Oliver admitted to attempting to groom the minor, attempting to communicate sexually with a child, and breaching his sexual harm prevention order.

Judge Tim Gittins sentenced Oliver to two years in prison, with an extended three-year license period.

Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subject to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of Oliver's actions, stating, 'You engaged on social media with a profile of someone who you were told was a 13-year-old girl.

I am satisfied you knew that and continued to engage with that profile, believing it to be a 13-year-old girl.' He further remarked, 'In fact, as you now know, it was a decoy profile put there by a voluntary vigilante group, who you were very quick to engage in a sexual way.

The conversation was such that I am satisfied you were intending penetrative sexual intercourse with that child, had the opportunity arisen.' Judge Gittins concluded by highlighting the ongoing risk Oliver posed, stating, 'I take the view, at this stage, that you remain a substantial risk of committing further contact offences and causing really serious harm to female children in particular.' The case underscores the persistent danger posed by individuals like Oliver, despite previous convictions and legal restrictions, and the importance of vigilant community efforts to protect minors from exploitation.
