KEVIN NEWSON FROM DAVENTRY SENTENCED FOR CHILD BLACKMAIL AND INDECENT IMAGES IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE

A man residing in Daventry, Northamptonshire, has been formally sentenced after a disturbing case involving child exploitation and blackmail. Kevin Newson, aged 43, was the focus of a detailed investigation led by the National Crime Agency (NCA), which culminated in his arrest and subsequent conviction.

According to authorities, the case originated from a report received from the United States, where law enforcement agencies approached the NCA with concerns about a 16-year-old girl who had been targeted online. The victim recounted that Newson had initiated contact with her through various messaging platforms in late 2019 and early 2020. Over this period, he persistently asked her to send indecent images of herself, promising to send her money in exchange. To substantiate his claims, Newson even sent a screenshot of his UK bank account, attempting to persuade her to comply.

The young girl complied initially by sending some images, but she refused to send additional photographs when Newson pressed her further. His response was to threaten that he would send the images he already possessed to her family, friends, and school if she did not continue to send more images. This coercive tactic was part of a pattern of grooming and exploitation that caused significant distress to the victim.

In June 2022, the NCA arrested Newson during a raid. During the subsequent review of his mobile device, investigators uncovered a disturbing collection of illicit material, including one Category B indecent video and 14 extreme images. Further analysis of chat logs retrieved from the victim’s device revealed conversations with Newson, along with an online profile picture of himself. These findings provided concrete evidence of his involvement in the exploitation.

Throughout the police interview, Newson chose to answer all questions with a refusal to comment. He was formally charged with multiple offenses, including blackmail and causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a child. Additional charges related to the possession of indecent images and extreme pornography were also considered, though they will be kept on file.

On 10 February, Newson appeared before Northampton Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charges of blackmail and child exploitation. Today, he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison. The court also imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) and mandated his registration on the Sex Offenders Register for a decade.

Phil Eccles, the Senior Investigating Officer from the NCA, emphasized the gravity of the case: "Kevin Newson groomed his victim into believing they were friends. But when she sent indecent images as Newson requested, he blackmailed her into sending more by threatening to send them to her family, friends, and school. Newson thought the distance between him and his victim would allow his abuse to continue undetected, but thanks to our US partners and the relentless efforts of our investigators, his crimes have been uncovered. The NCA remains committed to fighting child exploitation and bringing offenders like Newson to justice."
