KEVIN HENWOOD'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL ABUSE IN LISKEARD: FARMER DISQUALIFIED AFTER CRUELTY OFFENSES

Kevin Anthony Henwood, a part-time farmer residing at 3 Melbourne Bungalows in Liskeard, has been found guilty of multiple serious animal welfare violations and has faced significant legal consequences. Born around 1966, Henwood was convicted in 2022 after a detailed investigation into his treatment of sheep on his property.

Henwood was disqualified from keeping cattle, pigs, and sheep following his admission to numerous offences involving the neglect and mistreatment of his animals. The court heard that prior to April 22, 2021, Henwood allowed sheep to have access to hazardous materials, including concrete, plastic, shingles, slates, insulation, gypsum boards, wood, electrical wires, hollow silicone tubes, and various sharp objects such as hacksaws, screwdrivers, forks, and nails embedded in a pile of wood. Such conditions posed a severe risk to the health and safety of the animals under his care.

In addition to these neglectful conditions, Henwood pleaded guilty to failing to provide prompt and effective treatment for sheep suffering from lameness, a condition that can cause significant pain and suffering if left untreated. This failure was documented to have occurred on or before June 28, 2021. The court also found that Henwood was responsible for improper disposal of sheep and lamb carcasses, which is a serious breach of animal welfare laws. Furthermore, he failed to maintain proper records of drug administration, mortality, and sheep movements, violating legal requirements designed to ensure transparency and accountability in livestock management.

Henwood’s history of animal cruelty is not new. He was previously prosecuted in 2005 for cruelty offences and received a two-year ban from keeping animals in 2008, indicating a pattern of neglect and abuse over the years.

As part of his sentencing, Henwood was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay a total of £2,095 in costs and charges. His disqualification from raising cattle, pigs, and sheep was set for a period of ten years, although this order was suspended for 28 days to allow for any appeals or further legal procedures. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of his violations and the ongoing concern for animal welfare in the region.

This case has garnered attention from local authorities and animal welfare organizations, highlighting the importance of strict enforcement of animal protection laws and the need for responsible farming practices in the South West region, including Liskeard and Falmouth.
