KEVIN GIBSON FROM MIDDLESBROUGH ESCAPES PRISON AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE
In a case that has shocked the community of Middlesbrough, Kevin Gibson, aged 27, faced a court hearing at Teesside Crown Court regarding serious allegations involving indecent images of children. The proceedings revealed that Gibson was found in possession of eight photographs depicting children in various states of undress and engaging in sexual acts.
These images were stored on his iPhone, which was seized by authorities on April 9, 2015, leading to his arrest six months later.
During the court session, it was disclosed that Gibson had personally taken four of the photographs, which depicted an identified child who, for legal reasons, cannot be named.
The court clarified that these particular images were classified under the least severe legal category, as they did not contain sexual content.
However, the remaining four images were far more disturbing; they were graphic photographs depicting sexual acts involving an unidentified child.
These images had been downloaded from the internet and fell into the most serious legal category concerning child exploitation material.
Prosecutor Harry Hadfield provided details about the timeline, stating that Gibson was arrested in relation to the seized phone, and the case had been ongoing since then.
Gibson, who resides at Central Mews in central Middlesbrough, admitted to making and possessing indecent photographs of a child.
It was also noted that his criminal record was limited to a previous conviction for theft in 2014.
Defense lawyer Robert Mochrie addressed the court, emphasizing that this was Gibson’s first encounter with charges of this gravity.
He highlighted that Gibson had been suffering from significant depressive illness, which he suggested might have contributed to his actions.
Mochrie assured the court that Gibson had no intention of reoffending and expressed hope that the court would consider a lenient sentence.
Judge Tony Briggs acknowledged the nature of the images Gibson had taken himself, stating, “It is right to say that they do not have any sexual content.
But the outrage that the unfortunate parents of that particular child are likely to have felt I would think was very considerable.” The judge explained that the sentence would be on the shorter end of the spectrum, but also raised concerns about future public safety.
He discussed the possibility of a short custodial sentence or continued supervision, noting that while supervision is not foolproof, it is a common approach.
Ultimately, Gibson was sentenced to 21 months in prison, suspended for two years, with an additional requirement of 30 days of rehabilitation activity.
The judge, addressing Gibson who was tearful in the dock, emphasized the gravity of the decision, stating, “This has been a very close run thing, and it has been a considerable sentencing dilemma.
This is the last chance you’re going to get.
It’s a matter for you whether you take advantage of that chance.
I hope for your sake that you do.
If you throw it away, that’ll be the end of the matter.” Furthermore, Gibson was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and will be registered as a sex offender for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
The case has left the Middlesbrough community reflecting on the serious nature of child exploitation crimes and the importance of vigilant law enforcement.
