KEVIN CLEGG FROM BOOTLE CONVICTED OF HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN LIVERPOOL COURT
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Bootle and the wider Liverpool area, Kevin Clegg, aged 37, was found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses against a young girl. The crimes, spanning over six years, involved a brutal campaign of sexual abuse that left the victim emotionally scarred and her childhood forever altered.
During the proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court, it was revealed that Clegg committed at least 44 separate acts of rape against the young girl.
These acts were part of a sustained pattern of abuse, which the judge described as a "campaign of rape." In addition to the rapes, Clegg was convicted of 42 other sexual offenses, including 20 instances where he encouraged the girl to touch his private parts, further demonstrating the extent of his predatory behavior.
The court heard how Clegg, who was residing in Bootle at the time, systematically exploited the vulnerability of his young victim.
Judge Denis Watson, QC, emphasized that the girl was extremely vulnerable and that Clegg’s actions had a profoundly damaging impact on her mental and emotional well-being.
The judge condemned Clegg’s conduct as a deliberate and calculated assault on a defenseless child, leaving her with lifelong emotional scars.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Watson described the abuse as a "campaign of rape and sexual abuse" that was carried out over a lengthy period.
He also pointed out that any admissions Clegg made during police interviews appeared to be attempts to minimize his crimes, as he was seen to be trying to downplay the severity of his actions.
Clegg pleaded guilty to two specific charges: one count of sexual assault and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The prosecution, led by Martine Snowdon, detailed how Clegg had touched the girl’s breasts and genitalia over her clothing and had made her rub his genitals.
Despite these admissions, Clegg denied a further 10 charges, which included six counts of rape, one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, one count of sexual assault of a child, assault by penetration, and additional sexual assault charges.
Some of these charges involved multiple instances of abuse, with one count encompassing 20 separate rapes.
Clegg, who was described as having no fixed address, stood trial last month, during which the young girl was required to give evidence about her traumatic experiences.
The jury convicted him of the 10 charges he faced, rejecting his attempts to deny or minimize his actions.
During his testimony, Clegg claimed that he had only kissed the girl once and insisted that his police interview statements were accurate.
However, when the prosecutor pointed out that he had previously admitted to two or three additional kisses after the initial one, Clegg attempted to dismiss his earlier statements as a "mistake." The judge made it clear that the jury had rejected Clegg’s version of events, underscoring the severity of his misconduct and the credibility of the victim’s testimony.
