KEVIN BINGHAM FROM NOTTINGHAM CAUGHT AFTER TRAVELING 150 MILES TO SEDUCE TEENAGE BOY IN SUNDERLAND
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and the vigilance of paedophile hunters, Kevin Bingham, a man from Nottingham, was apprehended after traveling over 150 miles to meet a supposed underage boy in Sunderland. It was October of the previous year when Bingham believed he was engaging in conversations with a 14-year-old named Thomas through the popular dating application Grindr.
Unbeknownst to him, the profile he was communicating with was part of an operation conducted by Guardians of the North, an organization dedicated to catching adults seeking illicit encounters with minors by posing as children online.
Newcastle Crown Court was informed that Bingham, who had previously been cautioned by police for kissing a minor, quickly escalated the situation by sending explicit images of himself to the fake profile.
Within hours of initial contact, he also transmitted a video depicting an adult male performing a sexual act, further demonstrating his intent.
As the days progressed, Bingham made arrangements to meet the supposed minor.
He booked a seaside hotel in Whitley Bay and then traveled from his residence in Petters Hollow, Bulwell, Nottingham, to Sunderland.
His destination was a McDonald's restaurant, where he planned to meet the young boy.
However, his plans were thwarted when he arrived at the designated meeting point.
Instead of meeting a minor, Bingham was confronted by members of the paedophile hunting group, who had accompanied police officers and recorded the encounter on video.
The authorities had been alerted and were present to arrest him.
Further investigation into Bingham’s mobile phone revealed a disturbing collection of indecent images and videos of children—totaling 199 in number.
These materials included both photographs and movies, underscoring the severity of his offenses.
During court proceedings, Bingham, who has no fixed address, admitted to charges of attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act and attempting to meet a child following grooming.
He also pleaded guilty to the possession of indecent images of children.
Judge Edward Bindloss sentenced Bingham to 16 months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a lifelong sex offender and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
The judge emphasized the gravity of the case, noting that Bingham’s actions were premeditated and escalated rapidly after initial contact.
He pointed out that Bingham’s previous police caution for similar conduct added to the seriousness of his current offenses, stating, “Your position is aggravated by the previous caution.”
