KENNETH NELSON, NORTH YORKSHIRE MUSIC TEACHER, SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES AT YORK CROWN COURT
A music teacher from North Yorkshire, Kenneth Nelson, aged 55, was convicted of possessing a large collection of indecent images of children after a slip-up on social media led to his arrest.Nelson was investigated following a tip-off from the national Child Exploitation Online Protection police squad, who became aware when he accidentally posted a picture of naked girls on the social media platform Pintres.
Nelson, who has worked at various schools and is a father of one from Wistow, North Yorkshire—who has since separated from his wife—claimed that he posted the picture by mistake.
However, he pleaded guilty to owning an extensive array of child pornography.
Judge Richard Wright QC addressed Nelson, stating, "The fact is you chose to search out such images and view them, you did it quite deliberately, you did it repeatedly." On June 14, officers executed a search warrant at Nelson’s home, uncovering 16,297 vile images stored across multiple devices including pen drives, flash drives, a computer tower, and a laptop.
The images, predominantly rated Category C, included explicit pictures of naked children and also material depicting children being raped and subjected to abuse.
Nelson admitted to possessing three counts of indecent images of children and one count of possessing a prohibited image.
Following his arrest, he was taken into custody, and during proceedings, he was seen fleeing the courtroom with his face covered by a maroon knapsack bearing the phrase "Youth and Childrens Sing Choirs." The court heard that Nelson had previously pleaded guilty and that the scope of his collection was deemed enormous.
Judge Wright sentenced him to six months in prison, suspended for 12 months.
He explained, "You had become quite literally obsessed with viewing images of that type.
The reality is all of these children were being abused and exploited by people like you who view these images for their own perverted, sexual gratification." Prosecutor Joe Culley highlighted that Nelson had admitted to searching for pre-teen pornography for excitement and expressed that Nelson felt ashamed and disgusted with his behavior.
He added that the high volume of images and deliberate internet searches were aggravating factors.
Defence attorney Lee-Anne Robins-Hicks stated that Nelson had written to the parents of former students, explaining the proceedings, at police prompting.
Additionally, Nelson was sentenced to a community order with a 20-day rehabilitation program, placed on the sex offenders register, and subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to prevent him from working with children.
