KENNETH CHARNLEY CONWY BUSINESSMAN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON SCHOOLGIRL

In March 2015, a disturbing case unfolded in Conwy involving a local businessman named Kenneth Charnley, who was ultimately sentenced to prison for his heinous actions towards a young girl.

The court proceedings revealed a troubling pattern of grooming and sexual misconduct that shocked the community and brought to light the darker side of a man once considered a reputable figure.

Kenneth Charnley, aged 65 and residing at The Plas Hall Hotel in Dolwyddelan, appeared before Mold Crown Court to face serious charges.

He was accused of indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 12 in 2013, a crime that the prosecution argued was the culmination of a grooming process.

Despite his vehement denial, claiming he was innocent and that his actions were misinterpreted, the jury found him guilty on both counts—indecent assault and possession of indecent photographs of the girl.

The court heard how Charnley, in an attempt to manipulate the young girl, falsely claimed to have contacts within the media and television industries.

He took hundreds of photographs of her, ostensibly to help her pursue a career as an actress or model.

Some of these photographs, however, were of an indecent nature, which the jury concluded was part of a calculated grooming strategy.

Charnley insisted that his intentions were innocent, claiming he was merely trying to capture images of her kicking her legs in the air, denying any malicious intent.

During the trial, it was revealed that Charnley told the girl that he could assist her in achieving her dreams by submitting her photographs to agencies.

The court found that this was a manipulative tactic designed to gain her trust.

The judge, Niclas Parry, described the relationship as one of planned grooming, emphasizing that despite the significant age difference, Charnley befriended the girl and exploited her aspirations for his own sexual gratification.

Further disturbing details emerged when Charnley attempted to test boundaries by encouraging the girl to lie on a bed.

When she refused, he pulled her onto his knee and indecently assaulted her.

The judge acknowledged that the incident was brief but emphasized that the girl’s bravery and resolve prevented the situation from escalating further.

The court noted that Charnley’s actions were deliberate and calculated, aimed at exploiting the girl’s innocence and dreams.

As the sentence was handed down, Charnley was visibly distressed, trembling in the dock and collapsing at one point before being led away to the cells.

Throughout the proceedings, he repeatedly insisted, “I didn’t do it,” despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Judge Niclas Parry sentenced him to two years and ten months in prison and ordered him to register as a sex offender indefinitely, underscoring the severity of his crimes.

Prosecutor Mark Connor described Charnley as having developed an unhealthy sexual interest in the young girl, highlighting the inappropriate photographs, gifts, and grooming tactics employed.

The defense, represented by Maria Massellis, urged the court to consider Charnley’s age and previously good character, arguing that the prison sentence would have a devastating impact on him.

Nonetheless, the court’s verdict reflected the gravity of the offenses and the need to protect vulnerable children from predators like Charnley.
