KENNETH BECKETT SENTENCED IN MIDDLESBROUGH FOR CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE CASE
In August 2018, a harrowing case of childhood sexual abuse was brought to light in Middlesbrough, where a survivor courageously shared his story of resilience and justice. The survivor, who endured years of torment at the hands of former DJ Kenneth Beckett, recounted how he chose to confront his past rather than succumb to despair.
Beckett, aged 50 at the time, was convicted of multiple serious charges related to the abuse he inflicted during the 1990s.
The court proceedings took place at Teesside Crown Court, where a jury deliberated for just under one and a half hours before reaching unanimous guilty verdicts on all eight counts he faced.
These charges included six counts of indecent assault—one of which would now be classified as rape—and two additional serious sexual offences.
The victim, who was a minor at the time of the abuse and several years younger than Beckett, bravely took the stand to deliver a heartfelt statement.
He described how the trauma had profoundly affected his life, leaving him unable to trust others and impacting his personal relationships and professional life.
He revealed that the abuse had left him battling ongoing mental health issues, including flashbacks and panic attacks, which continue to haunt him to this day.
He recounted a pivotal moment in his life when he faced a choice: to end his life or to stand up against his abuser.
He chose the latter, describing his decision as a turning point that ultimately led him to seek justice.
The survivor expressed gratitude towards his family and friends for their unwavering support throughout the ordeal.
He also voiced his disappointment that Beckett did not take responsibility for his actions voluntarily, but instead forced him to go through a lengthy trial process.
In his statement, he expressed hope that Beckett would reflect on his actions and seek the help he clearly needs.
The survivor also extended thanks to the police and the charity Arch North East, based in Middlesbrough, which provides support and counselling services for victims of sexual abuse.
During the trial, Beckett, who resided on Marton Road in Middlesbrough, showed signs of disapproval as the verdicts were read.
He shook his head in the dock as the court found him guilty of the charges.
The judge, Deborah Sherwin, described Beckett’s actions as taking advantage of the victim’s naivety, noting that Beckett, at the time, was a young man himself.
The judge detailed how Beckett exposed himself to the boy, gradually escalating to kissing, touching, and attempting to have sex with him.
She emphasized the victim’s inability to confide in anyone at the time, which compounded the trauma.
Judge Sherwin highlighted the lasting impact of such offences, stating, “Offences like this have deep and lasting effects.
I can only hope that he can now take some reassurance from the verdicts of the jury in this case.” As a result of his conviction, Kenneth Beckett was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
