December 2008 Academic had 430 child porn images A CANNINGTON man studying for a master of arts degree was found to have more than 430 indecent images of children on his computer when it was searched by child protection officers. Kelvin Haste, aged 48, of South Brook, had 49 class four images, described as ‘very serious’; 12 category three, 133 category two and 206 category one images, plus three category four movies, Taunton Crown Court was told. Haste, said to be living with adult members of his family, made full and frank admissions to making indecent images of a child. But Judge Jamie Tabor QC reminded him that, when he first appeared at the court, he protested his innocence and blamed others for downloading the images. He was an academic of previous good character, who was suffering from a bad back and had too much time on his hands, he added. Sentencing him to a three-year community order with supervision and attendance on a sex offenders programme, the judge added: “An intelligent man such as yourself doesn’t need me to tell you the evil that’s behind this.” Haste was also put on the sex offenders’ register for five years and served a sex offences prevention order restricting contact with people under 16.
