KASSIE BENTON FROM WALSALL SENTENCED FOR NEGLECTING DOGS IN HORRIFIC CONDITIONS

In a disturbing case that highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership, Kassie Benton, a resident of Walsall, was found guilty of neglecting her injured and ailing dogs, leading to severe suffering and tragic outcomes. Benton, born in September 1986 and residing on Talke Road, Walsall WS5 4PH, was responsible for two dogs whose conditions deteriorated due to her failure to seek necessary veterinary care.

Authorities became aware of the situation after concerns about the welfare of the animals were raised with the RSPCA. An RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer, Graeme Brookes, was dispatched to Benton’s home to investigate the reports. Upon entering the premises, Brookes described a scene of neglect and squalor. He noted a strong, unpleasant smell permeating the environment, with multiple fresh stains of faeces scattered across the living room floor. Domestic rubbish was strewn about, indicating a lack of proper care and hygiene.

Brookes observed two dogs in particularly poor condition. The first was an Akita named Delta, who was kept in the kitchen. Delta was found to be hobbling painfully, unable to place her paw on the ground due to swelling and injuries. Her back hair was matted, and puncture wounds were visible on both her legs. The swelling on her leg was significant, and she exhibited signs of pain and distress. The second dog was a Chihuahua named Eddie, who had a large ulcerated mass on his groin area. The mass was so severe that it impacted his ability to walk, and he was suffering from an open wound caused by the ulcer.

Both dogs were taken to a veterinary clinic for examination. The vet confirmed that both animals were suffering from neglect and untreated injuries. The report indicated that Benton was aware of Eddie’s swelling and ulceration, which had been present for several months. Despite this, she failed to seek medical attention, allowing the condition to worsen and causing unnecessary pain and suffering. The vet explained that Eddie’s condition was so severe that he had to be euthanized to prevent further suffering.

Regarding Delta, the vet noted that her injuries and the extent of her suffering were evident. The puncture wounds, swelling, and signs of infection suggested that she had been involved in a fight, yet no veterinary care was sought promptly. The vet emphasized that many bite injuries are just the surface of more extensive internal damage, including torn muscles and tissues below the skin. The delay in treatment had led to her current state of distress, but she was placed in RSPCA care and is now available for rehoming following a court order that deprived Benton of custody.

Graeme Brookes issued a stark reminder to pet owners, urging them to seek immediate veterinary care when their animals are injured or unwell. He stressed that pets rely entirely on their owners for their health and safety, and neglecting this responsibility can lead to tragic consequences. The case serves as a sobering example of the importance of timely medical intervention and responsible pet ownership.

In court, Benton was sentenced to a 26-week suspended prison term. She was also ordered to complete 15 hours of rehabilitation, pay costs amounting to £600, and a surcharge of £187. Additionally, she received a 20-year ban on keeping dogs, a measure intended to prevent future neglect and ensure the welfare of animals in her care. This case has garnered attention from local and national media outlets, including BirminghamLive, Express & Star, and ITV News, highlighting the ongoing issue of animal neglect in the region.
