KAREN WHITE AND STEPHEN WOOD'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN LEEDS PRISON AND BEYOND

In a case that has sparked widespread concern and controversy, Karen White, formerly known as Stephen Wood, has been convicted of multiple serious offenses, including rape and sexual assault, with her crimes spanning over a decade.

The incidents, which took place in various locations, have raised questions about the management of transgender prisoners within the UK prison system, particularly in Leeds.

In October 2018, White was handed a life sentence for her crimes, with a minimum term of nine and a half years to be served before eligibility for parole.

The charges stem from a series of heinous acts, including rape, sexual assault, and wounding, committed in 2016.

The case also revealed a disturbing history, as White had previously been convicted in 2001 for indecent assault and gross indecency involving a child, resulting in an 18-month imprisonment.

The controversy intensified in September 2018 when White, who was undergoing gender reassignment but had not yet completed full surgical procedures, was remanded into HMP New Hall, a women’s prison near Wakefield in West Yorkshire.

White, who was born Stephen Wood, identified as a woman and claimed to be a transgender woman.

However, her placement in a female facility became a source of concern when she was accused of multiple sexual misconducts shortly after her arrival.

Within just days of being transferred to the all-female prison, White made a sexual advance towards another inmate while in an aroused state.

This was followed by a series of inappropriate interactions, including a conversation about oral sex, during which White forcibly placed the other inmate’s hand on her padded bra, attempting to feel her breast.

These incidents marked the beginning of a troubling pattern of behavior.

Further allegations emerged when White was accused of pushing her hips and penis against another prisoner, and in November, she was alleged to have kissed a female inmate on the neck.

These actions prompted her transfer to HMP Armley, an all-male prison in Leeds, where the inmates who had been subjected to her misconduct came forward to report the assaults.

Under current regulations, prisoners are typically placed in facilities that correspond with their legally recognized gender.

If an inmate identifies as a gender different from their legal designation, a Transgender Case Board is convened to assess the situation, taking into account the individual’s previous offending history.

In White’s case, however, this process was not followed, raising questions about the adequacy of the prison’s procedures and the safety protocols in place.

A spokesperson for the Prison Service issued an apology, stating, “We apologise sincerely for the mistakes which were made in this case.

While we work to manage all prisoners, including those who are transgender, sensitively and in line with the law, we are clear that the safety of all prisoners must be our absolute priority.” White appeared at Leeds Crown Court last month, where she pleaded guilty to two counts of rape related to her 2016 attack, as well as indecently assaulting two other prisoners at New Hall.

She denied two additional charges of prison assaults, which were subsequently ordered to be laid on file.

The court was also informed of an historic rape committed in 2003, which White admitted today.

During the court appearance, White, who was dressed in a grey jumper and had her auburn hair tied in a ponytail, supported by a walking stick, sat in the dock.

The judge, Christopher Batty, adjourned sentencing until October 11 to allow for reports to be prepared assessing the potential danger White posed to others.

It was revealed that White had been living under the name David Thompson before she began her gender transition.

She was living as a woman at the time of the 2016 rape.

Initially, White claimed she could not be guilty of the prison attacks because she was not attracted to women and suffered from erectile dysfunction.

However, evidence presented in court painted a different picture.

Prosecutor Charlotte Dangerfield described how White had quickly established an inappropriate relationship with a fellow inmate upon her arrival at the prison.

She detailed that White would stand very close, touch her arm, wink, and that her penis was erect and visible through her trousers.

On September 26 of the previous year, White approached another inmate and made inappropriate comments about oral sex, which made the complainant feel sick.

She then took the inmate’s hand and placed it on her left breast, feeling her padded bra.

Further incidents occurred on October 5, when White again made inappropriate comments about oral sex and gave a bear hug to another prisoner, pushing her hips against her with such force that the victim could feel her penis.

The court also heard that White had been convicted in 2001 for two offences of indecent assault and gross indecency involving a child, leading to her imprisonment.

Currently, there are approximately 125 transgender prisoners in jails across England and Wales, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the prison system in managing such cases.

The case of Karen White and Stephen Wood continues to evoke debate about the policies and safety measures necessary to protect all inmates while respecting their gender identities.
