NOTTINGHAM MAN CONVICTED FOR ASSAULTING PREGNANT PARTNER AND HARASSMENT
A Nottingham man named Kane Passam was convicted of assaulting his seven-month-pregnant partner in their bedroom while she was experiencing Braxton Hicks contractions.Nottingham Crown Court heard how Passam asked her, “are you going to be like this when you’re in labour?” before threatening to take their baby from her at birth, calling her “unstable”.
During an argument, she told him she would not include his name on the birth certificate.
In response, he shoved her and then slapped her across the face with such force that she said she could not see for ten seconds and fell onto the bed.
Passam then immediately expressed regret by saying “s*** I should not have done that” and blamed her for his actions.
After their child was born and they separated, he continued to harass her with unwanted and sometimes aggressive messages.
As a result, Passam received a 12-month conditional discharge.
Judge Stuart Rafferty stated, “I am not going to send you to custody primarily because of the delay and that she is now encouraging you to see your child and does not want protection from you (via a restraining order).
But you have not covered yourself in any glory and if you are stupid enough to breach this (conditional discharge) you will come back before me and you better bring a bag because you will be going down the stairs (into custody).
This is your very, very, very, last chance, it is only circumstance that has saved you this time.
There’s no point being a bigger child than your own child, you can go, do not come back.” The incident happened in February 2022 when the victim was seven months pregnant.
Prosecutor Katrina Wilson described how the victim was in Braxton Hicks contractions, leaning over a cot when Passam entered the room and pulled her, causing her to cry, and then slapped her.
Wilson added that Passam called her “unstable” and threatened to take the baby.
Passam pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and harassment.
He had previous convictions, including a robbery for which he received a suspended sentence in July 2022.
Mitigating lawyer Katie Hodgkinson noted that her client had pleaded guilty early and had not committed any offences in nearly two years, adding, “His behaviour has improved distinctly.
When I spoke to him he told me ‘I can’t behave like this, it is not good for the victim and it is not good for our son’.”
