KAMIL HOSSENBUX, FORMER CHELTENHAM CARE HOME OWNER, SENTENCED IN CHELTENHAM FOR SYSTEMATIC ABUSE

In May 2014, Kamil Hossenbux, a 65-year-old man previously associated with a care home in Cheltenham, was sentenced to additional years in prison after admitting to multiple sexual offences involving young girls. Hossenbux, who is already serving a 12-year sentence for the rape of an 11-year-old girl, received a further six-year term for his crimes.

Gloucester Crown Court heard that Hossenbux, originally from Mauritius, used his position of trust and success to befriend the girls and their families before orchestrating systematic sexual abuse against girls aged between eight and 14, during the years 1990 to 1998, while he was in charge of a care home in Cheltenham.

Judge Jamie Tabor QC described Hossenbux as a powerful figure who exploited his status, saying, “You came from Mauritius and within a relatively short period of time, you became financially successful and influential. You were highly respected and trusted. But beneath this respectable exterior lived a bragging, devious, and manipulative predator.”

The court learned that the victims, now grown women, came forward after Hossenbux had been jailed for 12 years for raping an 11-year-old girl who had been living in Ferns Close, Selsdon, West Croydon. Prosecutor Mary Cowie revealed that Hossenbux led an extravagant lifestyle and attempted to convince the young girls he was preparing them for adult life.

During court testimonies, both women spoke about the profound impact Hossenbux’s abuse had on their lives. One described the abuse as her nightmare, expressing feelings of guilt and shame, especially after learning another girl had also been victimized. She recounted suffering from anxiety since age nine and feeling humiliated.

The other victim, visibly emotional, stated: “What he has taken from me can never be restored or taken back. The abuse pushed me to make wrong decisions, and I’ve experienced darkness ever since. All his actions were planned, calculated, and premeditated.” She addressed Hossenbux directly, saying, “You may think you have broken us or destroyed parts, but you haven’t. You did this for your sick twisted fantasies. The pain and dishonor you brought cannot be forgiven.”

Defense lawyer Sebastian Winnett expressed remorse on Hossenbux’s behalf, stating, “He accepts and acknowledges how much damage has been caused.”

Hossenbux pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14, five counts of indecency with a girl under 16, and a further attempt to rape a girl under 16 was ordered to be kept on file.

Additionally, Judge Tabor issued a lifelong sexual offenses prevention order, prohibiting Hossenbux from living at the same address as any child under 16 without social services approval and restricting him from visiting places where minors reside without explicit permission.

In a separate but related case, Hossenbux, of Ferns Close, Selsdon, was also sentenced in Croydon for the 2010 rape of an 11-year-old girl. He lured her to his office on Elmwood Road under the pretense of helping with her Oyster Card, smoking pornography to groom her, kissing her, and performing a sexual act. During the incident, he ordered her not to tell her mother.

Hossenbux, who previously operated a language college at that location before converting it into a care home for individuals with learning disabilities and dementia, was convicted last month at Croydon Crown Court of rape, sexual assault, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. Judge Ruth Downing sentenced him to a total of 12 years, remarking on his serious sexual issues and breach of trust. She stated, “It was a case of deception. You passed yourself off as a man of substance but have a criminal record and are not who you pretended to be.”

She further criticized his grooming of the young girl, emphasizing, “You wanted her, and you corrupted her when she just started school. You believed she wanted to learn about sex, which could have led to grooming. You manipulated her and treated her as an adult, using her for your own perverted purposes.”
