DARLINGTON MAN AVOIDS JAIL AFTER REPEATEDLY PUNCHING PARTNER IN FACE
A controlling and abusive man named Kai Wilson has narrowly avoided incarceration following a lengthy campaign of coercive and violent behavior. His actions culminated in him repeatedly punching his former partner in the face.
Wilson, aged 23, was found to have an extensive pattern of domestic abuse, which included bombarding his ex-partner with calls at her workplace, accusing her of infidelity, and drug abuse.
He had previously been subject to a domestic violence prevention order but breached it when he met his ex-partner to collect his dog on February 1.
Court proceedings revealed that Wilson punched her at least six times while she was driving, impairing her vision and forcing her to pull over.
She managed to escape and seek help after Wilson assaulted her.
Prosecutor Emma Wright highlighted that Wilson’s paranoia and violence were fueled by cocaine use, leading to incidents such as checking the loft for someone she was accused of being with and violent outbursts during the car journey.
Wilson pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behavior over five months, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and theft of her mobile phone.
Despite serving time in prison on remand, he was sentenced to two years in custody, suspended for two years, and ordered to undertake various rehabilitative measures, including a drug rehabilitation program, unpaid work, and a ten-year restraining order to protect his victim.
Judge Richard Bennett described the assault as cowardly and emphasized that the victim was defenceless in the car as Wilson struck her while she was driving.
