BLACKPOOL MAN JOHN MARSHALL JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY ON HOSPITAL WIFI

In a disturbing case that highlights the ongoing battle against child exploitation, a man from Blackpool was sentenced to prison after being found in possession of a staggering collection of over 81,000 images depicting child abuse.

The incident came to light when he was using a public hospital's Wi-Fi network to download these illicit images while he was hospitalized for a heart attack.

Julie Marshall, aged 54 and residing on Warbreck Drive in Blackpool, was convicted of possessing and downloading indecent images of children.

The court heard that among the images, 677 were classified as Category A, which is considered the most severe under law, illustrating acts of rape and torture involving young children.

Marshall was sentenced to nine months in prison, ordered to register as a sex offender for the next decade, and was also subjected to a six-year sexual harm prevention order.

The case was presented at Preston Crown Court, where Judge Simon Newell emphasized the importance of protecting the public and deterring similar offenses.

He stated, "I have to protect the public, I have to protect children, and I have to deter others from this type of offending." The judge also pointed out that although there was no direct victim in this case, the children depicted in the images are the real victims, having no say in the exploitation captured in these photographs.

Investigations revealed that some of the images date back as far as 2004.

It was not until 2019, two years after the initial Wi-Fi downloads, that legal proceedings commenced.

Prosecutor Beth Pilling explained that officers executed a warrant at Marshall’s property in April 2018.

During the search, Marshall immediately admitted to officers that he had images stored on his laptop, appearing visibly shaken and upset.

She was also found to have been on the verge of self-harm at the time of her arrest.

Further analysis uncovered that Marshall had used specific search terms such as “teens” and “15 year old models” during her online activity, indicating targeted searches for certain age groups.

The court was informed that the downloads spanned over a period of 14 years, which the judge described as a significant aggravating factor.

Judge Newell, who allowed Marshall to remain seated due to her use of a walking stick, expressed concern over the delays within the criminal justice system.

He remarked, “Until February or March this year, the system has been in disarray, with many cases remaining unresolved or uninvestigated in a timely manner.” He clarified that the delays were not due to the police or CPS but were a consequence of the increasing complexity of digital evidence analysis and limited resources.

The judge lamented that such delays exacerbate the suffering of victims and are unfair to those affected by these crimes.

Overall, the case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and the justice system in tackling online child exploitation, especially as technology advances and offenders find new ways to conceal their activities.
