JULIE KAVANAGH FROM GATESHEAD SENTENCED FOR STARVING DOG MISSY
Julie Kavanagh, also known as Julie Hope and residing at 19 Chestnut Gardens, Low Teams, Gateshead NE8 2TJ, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to her two-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Missy. The case drew significant attention after authorities uncovered the extent of the neglect that had persisted for at least three months. On January 26, 2024, an RSPCA Inspector visited Kavanagh’s property following a distress call that alerted the charity to Missy’s dire condition. During the inspection, Inspector Keogh observed that the dog was severely underweight, with her hips, ribs, and spine all prominently visible, indicating extreme malnutrition. In a statement to the court, Inspector Keogh detailed the scene, noting that when asked whether Missy had seen a veterinarian recently, Kavanagh confirmed she had not.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, the inspector took Missy to a veterinary clinic for a thorough examination. The veterinarian confirmed that the dog was suffering from the effects of prolonged starvation. In their official statement, the vet explained, “It is my opinion that the dog Missy had a poor body condition due to not being provided with food. The dog had been starved.” The clinical assessment revealed that Missy’s body condition score was a mere one out of nine, with muscle loss evident throughout her entire body. She weighed only 9 kilograms, significantly below the expected weight of around 15 kilograms for a dog of her age and breed.
Despite her condition, the veterinarian noted that Missy was able to eat food without difficulty when it was provided, demonstrating her ability to consume nourishment normally. The vet further stated, “The dog appeared clinically healthy and able to consume food. Therefore, the assumption can be made that the dog was deprived of food for a prolonged period of time resulting in the seen weight loss.” The examination concluded that Missy had suffered through a process of starvation and malnourishment, which would have caused her immense physical and mental distress over an extended period. The veterinarian estimated that her suffering had likely been ongoing for at least three months, if not longer.
Fortunately, Missy has since made a full recovery, thanks to prompt intervention and care. Following the sentencing, Inspector Keogh expressed his relief and emphasized the importance of pet owners’ responsibilities. He stated, “Missy was left to suffer because she wasn’t being provided with a basic right which is food, which led to her being starved and losing muscle. Pet-owners have a responsibility by law to ensure their pet is well cared for. I’m just pleased that Missy made a full recovery from this.”
The court handed down a sentence of a 12-month community order, which includes 60 hours of unpaid work. Kavanagh was also ordered to pay costs of £146 and a victim surcharge of £114. Additionally, she received a five-year ban on keeping any animals, a restriction that will remain in effect until August 2029.
