JOSHUA FREESTONE SENTENCED TO 32 MONTHS IN PRISON IN GAINESBOROUGH FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Joshua Freestone, 30, of High Street, Kexby, Gainsborough, has received a 32-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to domestic violence against his former girlfriend. The court was informed that over a 15-month period between 2017 and 2019, Freestone inflicted multiple acts of physical harm on his ex-partner. His offences included punching her, kicking her in the legs, causing a cut to her eyebrows, throwing bottles of vodka at her, and striking her behind the ear. He was charged with three counts of Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) and admitted guilt during his September 2023 trial. The court heard there were at least seven assault incidents during the time Freestone lived with the victim and her family before they moved in with her parents. His Honour Judge Simon Hirst remarked: "Over a course of 15 months on the basis of what prosecution accepted, you assaulted the victim on a minimum of seven occasions. Violence included punching her to the side of the face, kicking her in the legs, causing a cut to her eyebrows, throwing bottles of vodka at her and striking her behind the ear." The victim described feeling utterly broken, saying, "There are no words that can describe what he did to me and the damage that was done. I feel utterly broken, there is a piece of me I will never get back." She also explained that she had started studying A-Levels at the beginning of the relationship but had to give them up due to his controlling behaviour. This also led to her losing friends and being prevented from social outings. Mitigating factors considered by the court included Freestone’s guilty plea and issues with alcohol and drugs that affected his conduct. In addition to his prison term, he was issued a five-year restraining order. The victim expressed her longing for a different outcome, stating, "I will always wish it had been different and I could go back and change it. The only comfort I have is that this process will stop it happening to anyone else because I wouldn't wish what I went through on my worst enemy."
