ABINGDON PAEDOPHILE JOSHUA DODD SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR REPEATED CHILD SEX ABUSE IN SOUTH OXFORDSHIRE
In September 2020, a deeply disturbing case unfolded involving Joshua Dodd, a man from Abingdon, who was convicted of heinous crimes against children in South Oxfordshire. The court heard how Dodd, aged 28 at the time, engaged in a prolonged campaign of sexual abuse against an eight-year-old girl, raping her on at least 13 separate occasions. The victim, who was just a child at the time, recounted her feelings of fear and helplessness, stating that she was 'scared' of her abuser and that she 'just went along with it' because she did not understand what was happening to her. Her testimony revealed the terrifying extent of Dodd’s predatory behavior, which involved initial acts of kissing and touching, escalating to forced sexual acts, including rape. Prosecutors detailed that the girl was subjected to repeated assaults, with the abuse occurring over a period of time, although she could not specify the exact number of incidents, only that it was 'at least 13 times.'During the proceedings at Oxford Crown Court, the judge was informed that Dodd had also sexually assaulted a second young girl, who was under 13 years old, by groping her while performing a sexual act. This additional victim’s case further underscored Dodd’s pattern of predatory behavior. It was also revealed that Dodd had a troubling criminal history, including a previous conviction from 2018 for attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity, breaching a sexual prevention order, and possessing indecent images of a child. He was sentenced to over four years in prison at that time.
At his sentencing, Judge Ian Pringle QC described Dodd’s actions as 'repeated' and labeled him a 'dangerous offender.' The judge emphasized Dodd’s disturbing fascination with pre-pubescent girls and his relentless pursuit of sexual gratification through any means possible. Dodd’s criminal conduct was characterized by the court as a serious and ongoing threat to the safety of children. As a result, he was sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison, with an extended four-year license period following his release. Additionally, Dodd was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions aimed at protecting the public.
In a separate but related case from January 2018, Dodd was caught by paedophile hunters in Abingdon after he was lured into a trap set up by the group Net Justice. Posing as a 14-year-old girl named Emma, the hunters engaged Dodd in online conversations where he inappropriately messaged her about having sex and asked her to send nude pictures. The group recorded the encounter, which took place at an address in Abingdon, and subsequently posted the footage online. Dodd, who was then 25, was arrested shortly afterward. It was noted that he had recently been released from a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for similar offenses.
During the court hearing, prosecutor Alan Blake detailed how Dodd had contacted the decoy profile within six weeks of his release, engaging in increasingly sexual conversations. Dodd persistently asked to meet 'Emma' for sex, even suggesting a meeting in a disabled toilet. The court also learned that Dodd had a prior sexual relationship with a woman who was only 14 when he was 19, and that he continued to pursue contact with her even after she moved away. Dodd admitted to attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity, breaching a sexual prevention order, and making indecent images of a child. He was ultimately sentenced to four years and four months in prison for these offenses.
Throughout the proceedings, Dodd sat quietly, biting his nails, as the court recognized the severity of his actions and the ongoing danger he posed to children. His criminal record, combined with his recent offenses, underscored the need for stringent sentencing to protect the community. The court’s decision reflects a firm stance against such predatory behavior, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children from individuals like Joshua Dodd, whose actions have caused profound harm and distress.
