JONATHAN WITHEY AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN NOTTINGHAM
A former Scout leader from Nottingham has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of serious sexual offences committed against children.Jonathan Withey, aged 42, was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault and abuse involving two young victims, following a detailed trial at Nottingham Crown Court.
The criminal acts date back to the late 1990s, when Withey was just 16 years old.
It was during a Scout camp in 1997 that he first met a boy and a girl, both of whom were children at the time.
Over the course of the following year, Withey began a pattern of sexual misconduct that would span several years.
The girl endured sexual abuse over a period of four years, while the boy was subjected to similar acts for three years.
The court proceedings revealed the extent of Withey’s misconduct.
He was convicted on multiple counts, including two counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault, six counts of indecency with a child, and two counts of sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13.
These charges underscore the severity and duration of his offending.
On September 1, Withey, who resides on Tindall Close in Chilwell, was sentenced to a total of 16 years in prison.
Additionally, he will serve a further year on licence after his release and has been placed on the Sex Offender’s Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Kerry Humphreys, a police investigator with Nottinghamshire Police, commented on the case, stating, “Withey abused his position of trust as a Scout leader to prey upon these children over a long period of time.
He must have thought after all these years he had got away with his offending.
However, he underestimated the bravery of his victims and the determination of officers to bring him to justice.” Humphreys further noted that Withey continued to deny his crimes and showed no remorse during the trial, despite the significant impact his actions had on the victims.
“He is a devious and predatory sex offender whose offending has unsurprisingly had a very significant impact on these two victims,” he added.
Expressing gratitude to the victims for their courage, Humphreys emphasized, “As Withey prepares to spend a lengthy period behind bars, I’d like to personally thank them for their bravery in coming forward.
Withey would have remained a danger to any children he encountered if they had not spoken out about what happened.” Detective Sergeant Adam Taylor also highlighted the importance of protecting children, stating, “Nothing is more important to the force than the safety and wellbeing of children.
I would like to thank everyone involved in bringing this man to justice and hope this case encourages other victims to come forward.”
