JONATHAN BOTTERILL FROM DRIFFIELD INVOLVED IN LIVESTOCK ABUSE AT CRANSWICK COUNTRY FOODS
Jonathan Botterill, a livestock transporter based in Driffield, has been convicted of animal cruelty following a disturbing incident captured on CCTV footage. Born around 1977 and employed by Chris Waite Transport, Botterill was recorded on August 31, 2023, at Cranswick Country Foods in Preston, engaging in inhumane handling of a pig.In the footage, Botterill is seen lifting a visibly distressed pig by her ears and flipping her onto her back. This act of rough handling drew immediate concern and prompted an investigation by local authorities. The incident was brought to light after a referral from a veterinarian working for the Food Standards Agency, which prompted Animal Health Officers from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to initiate an inquiry into the matter.
Despite his extensive experience—having worked in livestock handling for over 20 years—and being trained in proper animal handling techniques, Botterill admitted during an interview that his actions were inappropriate. He acknowledged that he failed to utilize his pig board or seek assistance, which are standard practices to ensure animal welfare during handling. His conduct was deemed to be likely to cause unnecessary fear, injury, or suffering to the animal.
Following the investigation, the court found Botterill guilty of using violence that could cause harm and of employing prohibited handling methods. As part of his sentencing, he was ordered to pay a fine of £670, along with a victim surcharge of £268 and costs amounting to £884.94. The case highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare in the livestock industry and the importance of adhering to humane handling standards to prevent cruelty and suffering.
