BLACKPOOL TEACHING ASSISTANT JONATHAN BIRT SENTENCED FOR CHILD SPYING AND SEXUAL OFFENSES IN FYLE COAST
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Jonathan Birt, a 24-year-old teaching assistant from Blackpool, was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of a series of heinous acts involving the exploitation and voyeurism of children.The crimes took place at a primary school located along the Fylde coast, where Birt was employed as a staff member.
According to court records, Birt covertly installed multiple cameras within the school premises, specifically targeting the gymnasium and boys’ toilets.
These devices were used to secretly record children as they changed clothes during PE lessons, capturing them in their underwear.
The investigation revealed that Birt also set up a camera inside a bathroom to spy on a boy using the toilet, an act that constitutes a serious breach of privacy and trust.
Further disturbing details emerged during the investigation, which uncovered that Birt had also sexually assaulted a boy he was babysitting.
Additionally, he secretly filmed a teenage boy while the latter was taking a shower.
These acts of voyeurism and assault were part of a pattern of predatory behavior that Birt admitted to in court.
Law enforcement officials seized computer equipment from Birt’s residence in Blackpool, where they discovered a staggering 741 images depicting children being sexually abused.
An even more troubling discovery was made when investigators examined a hidden folder on his USB drive, falsely labeled ‘Recycle Bin’.
This folder contained numerous covert recordings, some of which were filmed at the school where Birt worked.
These clips showed children in their underwear as they changed from their school uniforms to their PE attire, highlighting the extent of his malicious activities.
During his appearance at Preston Crown Court, Birt pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including indecent assault, voyeurism, and possession of indecent images.
He admitted that he had set up the cameras for his own sexual gratification and confessed to being sexually attracted to boys aged eight and above.
His actions were described by Judge Stuart Baker as deliberate, calculated, and devious, reflecting a clear pattern of predatory intent.
Judge Baker sentenced Birt to a total of 48 months in prison, comprising 20 months for indecent assault, 12 months for voyeurism, and 16 months for possessing indecent images.
The case has left a lasting impact on the community, raising serious concerns about safeguarding and the safety of children in educational environments.
