JOHNATHAN SUTTON SENTENCED IN WALSALL FOR RAPE IN SWANSEA AND CWMAVON
In a case that has shocked the local communities, Swansea Crown Court heard harrowing details about the assault carried out by Johnathan Sutton, a 35-year-old man now residing in Walsall. The incidents took place in Cwmavon during June and August of 2021, at an address where Sutton was living at the time.According to court proceedings, two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, were victims of Sutton’s alleged crimes. It was revealed that both victims were heavily intoxicated during the assaults, with one of them being so drunk that she awoke while Sutton was raping her. The court heard that Sutton had deliberately supplied alcohol to one of the teenagers, aiming to increase her level of intoxication and thereby diminish her ability to resist or recall the events clearly.
Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, Sutton was ultimately found guilty by the jury at Swansea Crown Court. The judge presiding over the case, Catherine Richards, described Sutton as a “large, imposing man” in his 30s, contrasting sharply with the petite stature of his victims. She emphasized that Sutton had attempted to manipulate the victims after the assaults, falsely claiming that they had initiated the sexual contact.
Judge Richards characterized Sutton as a “calculating, manipulating individual” capable of displaying “uncontrollable behaviour,” which contributed to the severity of his crimes. As a result, she sentenced him to a substantial extended term of 18 years in prison, covering two counts of rape against the two victims.
Detective Constable Gary Willis-Hill from South Wales Police issued a statement condemning Sutton’s actions, stating, “Johnathan Sutton was clearly a dangerous man who preyed upon victims when he felt he was in a position of control over them.
By pleading not guilty to these crimes, he has shown that he has no remorse for his actions, and the impact which his actions have had upon the lives and wellbeing of his victims.
He is now going to be behind bars for a very considerable amount of time.”
