JOHN WEBBER BRUTALIZED BOYS IN BRIGHTON CHILDREN'S HOME AND FACES 32-YEAR SENTENCE

In December 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving John Webber, a man with a dark past who was convicted of heinous crimes committed in Brighton.

Webber, who once held a position of trust as the head of a children’s home near Chichester called the Old Rectory during the 1970s, exploited his role to carry out repeated sexual abuses against vulnerable boys under his care.

Webber, now an octogenarian residing on Clifton Hill in Brighton, appeared at Hove Crown Court where he was found guilty of multiple serious charges.

The court established his guilt on three counts of buggery, involving the rape of boys as young as eight years old.

Additionally, he was convicted of 19 counts of indecent assault, two counts of attempted buggery, and two acts of indecency with a child.

It is believed that the actual number of victims and assaults is significantly higher, as Webber targeted multiple victims over an extended period, often multiple times.

Judge David Rennie, presiding over the case, delivered a stern judgment, condemning Webber’s lack of conscience and his cruel betrayal of the children’s trust.

The judge described Webber as a man who had “no conscience,” exposing his victims to a humiliating and traumatic public trial.

The court sentenced him to a total of 32 years in prison, emphasizing the profound and lasting harm caused by his actions.

Victims of Webber’s abuse recounted their experiences, describing feelings of trauma and ongoing psychological struggles.

One victim shared that he still experiences flashbacks, recalling the smell of Webber’s tobacco and the disturbing memory of Webber licking his face.

Many victims have struggled with relationships and grappled with feelings of guilt and shame.

One survivor expressed that the trial was the most terrifying experience of his life, revealing the deep scars left by Webber’s predatory behavior.

During the proceedings, Jennifer Knight, the prosecutor, highlighted how Webber employed grooming tactics and meticulous planning to manipulate his victims, describing his abuse as an “overwhelming betrayal of trust.” In contrast, Philippa McAtasney, Webber’s defense attorney, claimed her client was “shell-shocked” by the verdict and suggested that the victims had “turned on him.” She also pointed out that Webber had positive qualities and had contributed positively in other aspects of his life, though she acknowledged that his reputation was now in ruins.

Judge Rennie was unequivocal in his condemnation, stating that Webber’s public persona as a caring father figure was a façade.

Behind this veneer, he was a “predatory paedophile” who viewed children as objects to satisfy his perverted desires.

The judge emphasized that the children had trusted Webber, unaware of his true nature, and that his betrayal was both cruel and devastating.

The court also discussed the environment of the children’s home, which prior to Webber’s arrival was known for being strict and austere.

Webber introduced a more relaxed atmosphere, including activities such as archery, cycling, camping, and caring for animals, which many children found comforting.

The food improved, and Webber was seen by many as a father figure.

However, the judge pointed out that the children had nowhere else to go, and there was a lack of proper inspection or oversight of the facility.

Webber’s history of criminal behavior was also noted.

In 2001, he had previously been imprisoned for possessing indecent images of children and boasting about his desires on online chat rooms.

The court sentenced him to an additional 20 years for a count of buggery involving another boy, with concurrent sentences for other offenses, including indecent assault.

The cumulative sentence amounted to 32 years, with Webber required to serve at least half of that term.

Judge Rennie concluded by acknowledging that Webber had evaded justice for decades but was finally brought to account.

He stated, “You got away with your grave crimes for decades, but now it has caught up with you at the end of your life.

The victims’ voices were finally heard, they were believed, and their lives will be better for that.”
